Professional statement

Susan “Sue” Sugar is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker of 25+ years working with adults across the state of Arizona, providing innovative therapies for relief and recovery of the often debilitating effects of trauma. With an expansive view of trauma, Sue recognizes that trauma experiences, whether the Big-T trauma that is most obvious or the Little-t trauma that is more subtle but just as devastating, she is committed to rooting out the causes and working to lessen their impact. She is dedicated to creating safe and supportive space as she walks individuals through their recovery journey.

Sue’s approach is rooted in the recognized and accepted understanding that trauma, whether experienced in childhood or adulthood, can be “frozen” in the brain and central nervous system and, often unconsciously, wreaking havoc in present life. Sue uses several evidence-based therapies to assist in processing and clearing the impact of trauma and allowing the true self to emerge. Her primary modalities include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), it’s adjunct, Flash Technique, inner system work often to repair attachment breeches, and visualization techniques to begin to build the future. And, she is not averse to using humor to lighten the journey.

Sue has often been described as down-to-earth and easy to talk with . She is naturally empathic and intuitive and clients have appreciated the safe space that she is able to create for them to reveal their most true and vulnerable selves…and to explore and reveal their best self. She revels in their personal growth and discovery…be sure to ask her about the “chair dance.”

Message to clients

I have been in practice for over 25 years and I bring a lifetime of experience to my work. When I was younger I could analyze and tell you everything about my issues and what I wanted to change in myself…but, I did not know how to make the changes. Talking about them was good, will power worked for a while, affirmations worked for about a minute but real change could not be made with only these attempts.

From early on, I searched for modalities that went beyond my rational understanding and worked at the origin of those beliefs and behaviors. I learned that mere will power and affirmations cannot overcome early programming in the brain and central nervous system especially when under stress…and we need help with overcoming that programming.

Consequently, I have adopted and utilize several state-of-the-art therapies that do just that…work with the brain and body to clear the old stuck beliefs and behaviors and allow that wise, compassionate self to come forth and bring new meaning to our lives. These include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Flash Technique, Internal Systems integration, and somatic (body) awareness and processing…and I am always on the lookout for new advances in the treatment of trauma,

These not only repair the past damage and deficits but help you bring forth the best you…the truth of who you are. I am always honored to enter into this sacred process with my clients.
