Professional statement

Tania Guimaraes is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist working in New York since the early 90's. She works with individual adults and couples of diverse identity. Ms. Guimaraes blends a psychodynamic approach with Cognitive Behavior Therapy. She works collaboratively with patients to promote growth and development. Ms. Guimaraes holds the principle that every patient and couples want to achieve a feeling of being genuine with themselves and others. Her work with patients consist in recognizing that sometimes some responses do not yield the desired result. She supports a journey of self discovery where patients become able to sort entangled emotional and psychological cognitive processes, that were once useful, but became impediments. Ms. Guimaraes works with each individual to develop their own and unique feeling of self integration and wholeness, as well as their place in the world they help to create.

Ms. Guimaraes is a trained Psychoanalyst who is also certified in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. She blends experiences from both. In addition Ms. Guimaraes has acquired knowledge and practice in numerous other modalities, some now integrated in her practice. Ms. Guimaraes supervises training Psychoanalysts and Clinical Social Workers.

Her practice was located in the heart of the city before the pandemic. Ms. Guimaraes is now practicing exclusively remotely, Her intention is to transition to a hybrid of in-person and remote sessions where clients will be able to choose. She is returning to midtown once the pandemic subsides.

Message to clients

The idea that one can experience inner tranquility for the majority of their time with themselves and others, can sound utopic. In my personal and professional journey so far, I find out that it is a pursuit worthy of observation. I believe that we are not made to nurture conflicts but to learn from them.

In my practice I hold on to some principles that guide me during each encounter with each person. Individuality by itself can be experienced in a myriad of ways. We need to grow mature and wise to locate and respect when we need and want connection with others, and when our sovereignty need to operate from the center.

In our work I will hold your values, your uniqueness as royal. What I mean is, that you arrive as is and will leave as yourself. The only difference is that you may modify the way you see yourself and yourself with others. You are the one who decides if you want to make this or that change, or action. My role will be to guide you to observe the process you use. Together we will consider what is working and what may not be working for you, and if there may be another perspective. The goals and objectives of all treatments are as ambitious and wide or narrow and simple as your desires and curiosity about yourself.
