Professional statement

Tianyu Zhang (she/her) is a licensed master social worker who specializes in helping people who have experienced cultural stigma as they face depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. She draws on her own personal experience as an immigrant to help those from Eastern cultures find healing and growth. She also works with anyone coping with a cultural transition.

As part of Tianyu's tailored approach, she provides space for personal growth as well as concrete coping skills. She is trained in a variety of therapy approaches, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and more.

With Tianyu, therapy is centered around the client. She considers factors like background, culture, living situation, and unique life experiences to provide the highest quality care. Tianyu believes clients are the real experts of their lives and that they have the power to make changes, reach their goals, and improve their day-to-day lives.

Tianyu is accepting new clients and conducting both English and Mandarin sessions.

Message to clients

There's a space between being perfectly mentally healthy and seriously mentally unwell. I operate within that space- my clients don't need a crisis to see me. They just need a desire to make life better and a willingness to put in some work to get there.

My clients and I explore the ways thoughts, feelings, and behavior are connected. How would it be if you interacted with them differently? What would change? Sometimes we work on practical skills, and sometimes we do some self-exploration. What matters is that I am giving my clients what they need to move forward.

I would call my approach eclectic, reflective, and tailored. That means that I use whatever approach works, I am responsive to your feedback, and I change when you need it. I've got a full toolbox- from dialectical behavioral therapy to acceptance and commitment therapy- and something in it will suit you perfectly. Together, we'll figure out what that is.
