Professional statement

Timothy Rasmussen, MS, LMFTA is a marriage and family therapist associate who simply goes by Tim. He specializes in helping people find authenticity in their preferred way of living, especially for those with challenges who identify in the kink, polyamory, and LGBTQIA+ communities.

As a member of all three of these communities, Tim's educational background and lived experience offer clients a warm, deeply human approach to therapy that is supportive, caring, mindful, and non-judgmental.

For potential clients who are worried about being embarrassed or judged by a therapist regarding their identities or problems, Tim believes in the therapeutic power of radical acceptance, radical authenticity, and radical empathy.

Be seen. Be heard.

Message to clients

I consider it a genuine privilege when people invite me into their lives to collaborate on change. The kink, polyamory, and LGBTQIA+ communities are especially close to my heart. Although I don't know your particular experience, I do know how corrosive it is to live in fear of judgment. Too often, I find the therapy profession overly focused on insurance, diagnosis, mental health/identity labels, and problem talk - all while ignoring the incredible human beings sitting right in front of them, full of untapped strength and resiliency.

I want to see you and hear you in the way you prefer to be seen and heard. Maybe someone has diagnosed you in the past, but I want to know how you experience it, how you would describe it in your own words. I want to stay close to your experience of the world - not mine, not the insurance company's, not the textbooks - but what means the most to you.

I am a professional with well-considered boundaries; I am also an open person, a thoughtful and lively human being, who uses these qualities in service of my clients. I am kind, respectful, candid, spontaneous, and believe in the power of both metaphor and humor. Laughter is an invitation to connection. My best hopes are that our work together will make it possible to think, feel, and say things aloud that have never been thought, felt, or said before.

No matter the problem, I promise I will not judge you.
