Tracy Vadakumchery, LMHC, also known as The "Bad Indian" Therapist, is an Indian American therapist in New York and Florida who helps South Asian Americans conquer cultural shame, guilt, and trauma. She treats anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and body-image related issues. She is no stranger to these issues herself and believes that cultural shame and trauma greatly impact South Asian Americans facing these conditions. She has been directly and indirectly called "Bad Indian Girl" many times, and has now embraced her complicated identity.
Tracy ignored the "What will people think?!?" perspective and took the road less traveled with her career. When she attended Teachers College Columbia University to get her Master of Education in Psychological Counseling, she was one of four South Asian people she knew in the program. In fact, she was the first person in her family to pursue this field, let alone go to therapy. She worked with incarcerated people at Rikers Island. She used to travel to people's homes in Manhattan and Queens to give family therapy, intervene in conflict, and manage crises. These jobs really challenged Tracy's beliefs of what it means to be a "good" therapist and a "good" Indian. Through the help of her supervisors and her training, Tracy challenged herself, decreased her self-doubt, and became more confident, even when she felt isolated in her career. Now, she teaches South Asian Americans the things she's learned along the way.
Tracy specializes in trauma therapy like EMDR and uses CBT to help clients with anxiety and depression. She loves going deeper with clients and can also be a validating sounding board to vent to. She provides both virtual sessions and in-person sessions in Manhattan. Come have a cup of chai with her and book your call with her today!
