Professional statement

Dr. William Gardner is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist located in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Gardner specializes in providing individuals with the tools they need to manage the difficult emotions that arise throughout the day. He is passionate about helping those who suffer from the impact of anxiety, depression, phobias, and traumas. He also works with clients who find themselves overwhelmingly angry, either at situations or at other people.

Dr. Gardner’s approach to therapy is based on a short-term, brief intervention model. He equips his clients with coping skills so they can restart their lives again with healthy patterns. With clients, he draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques by teaching clients to recognize cognitive distortions like assumptions or misinterpretations. He collaborates with clients to find solutions to their presenting problems and provides a safe, comfortable environment for exploring thoughts, feelings, and ideas.

Dr. Gardner earned his PsyD from Stanford University. He is dedicated to using evidence-based practices in his sessions and aims to help clients enjoy their lives, rather than feeling stressed. His style is positive and compassionate and his practice is accessible for adult clients of all ages.

Message to clients

This has been such a difficult time for all of us. We each have been working through our issues on our own and in our own ways, with most of the outlets we would have normally had, such as friends, activities and other distractions, out of our reach. These normal activities allow us the opportunities to burn off steam, to reset our stress levels and to supplement our needs in our interpersonal relationships. Without the normal balances in our lives many issues that we are normally able to put aside or ignore are rearing their ugly little heads and need to be addressed. But there are also advantages to the stay at home, and that is that we can take the time we need to work on the issues that may have been there for years as well as those issues that are only now showing up.

I feel so fortunate to be able to do the work I do with people. My hope in working with you is to help you to rapidly make changes to the way you think and feel, problem solve issues that are coming up in your life and create work arounds when the tasks required to feel better seem overwhelming. More than just a sounding board, I will work as a guide, friend and teammate to help you move forward toward your goals.
