Therapists Specializing in Domestic Violence in Washington DC

Domestic violence involves any type of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse within a relationship or family. Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and it often has a huge impact on the mental and physical health of those who experience it. People who are subjected to, under the threat of, or have witnessed domestic violence may struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, and/or substance abuse.

If you or someone you know is at risk of harm, safety is the first priority. Having the support of a trusted therapist during the process of planning how to leave can be of great benefit. Once you are safe, therapy can help you heal from the psychological effects of domestic violence. Though people react in different ways when faced with stressful and potentially dangerous situations, many providers take a trauma-informed approach to therapy.

The therapists in Washington DC below can help you work through your experiences, develop coping strategies, and heal. Therapists have been vetted by the Zencare team for their expertise in domestic violence and the provision of clinically rigorous, quality care. A special note to my prospective online clients: I feel privileged to help my clients through a variety of challenges as they embrace life transitions. Working together, I can help you move forward with confidence and strength.
Many of my clients come to me with mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. I am very mindful of the degree to which you appear to be impacted in your daily life by these symptoms when we are working together. Please understand that your safety and well-being is most important to me. I am not equipped in my current office setting to manage severe depression, active thoughts of harming yourself in any way, or thoughts and ideas that do not connect to existing reality. If we begin working together and symptoms like these become apparent, I will make additional referrals for you in order to assure that you receive the best possible care and support.

If you've experienced trauma, the single most important protective factor for healing is to have a community, and a support system. We can help catch you if you feel like you've fallen, and help lift you back up.

If you're feeling burnt out, know this is a real phenomenon for professionals, parents, and caretakers. Therapy is available to help you give a little back to yourself. We strive to show you care, the same way that you do for others. We work closely with you to ensure you are equipped with self-awareness and personal-care tools for sustainable, positive change.

All of our providers at the Woolf Center utilize evidence-based practices for treatment. This includes modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, Sensorimotor psychotherapy, Mindfulness, and Perinatal Mental Health. All of our therapists are experienced with trauma, whether you have life trauma or a specific event that you perceive as a traumatic experience. You will not have to tell us anything you don't want to, but we will help you with increasing joy, satisfaction, and contentment in the here and now -- no matter how you feel when starting out.

Welcome. I often think of therapy as a road trip we are on together. You are the driver and I am the navigator helping you get to the place you want to be. In this safe space, you can share your feelings, wants, fears and experiences without the need to put on a brave face or worry about pleasing others. We will explore how you got to this place in your life, your strengths and what you would like to change. Together, we will re-weave the pieces of your life that work well with new threads to get you to a destination where you feel more content and fulfilled.

I believe therapy should be a place you feel safe to talk about those things that may have caused you shame in the past or may be stopping you from moving forward with the life you truly deserve!

If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsettled, talking to someone on the outside, an objective listener, can be a way to get clarity and put things into perspective. Whether you need guidance to make a change in your life, navigating difficult relationships, to dealing with the pressure to meet expectations - my goal is to help you claim personal power in situations where you feel hopeless, increase your self-awareness, and build your resilience in the face of challenge. I believe in creating a safe and judgement-free zone for you to speak your truth.

Using a collaborative approach, together we will uncover behavior patterns that might be getting in your way. I don't believe in a one size fits all approach. You are unique, and I seek to understand how your life experiences have shaped you. Together, we will identify or customize strategies that work best for you.
