Therapists Specializing in Existential Crisis & Challenges in New York

Whenever you’re faced with an important decision or life transition, it’s natural for larger questions about meaning and purpose to arise. Although existential challenges can surface at any time, they may be especially common upon entering a new life stage or when self-identity starts to shift, such as when making a career change or deciding to recommit to (or leave) a relationship. When these experiences lead to intense preoccupation with questions of greater meaning, feelings of a loss of control, and worry about the future, it can amount to existential crisis.

Therapy can help both in moments of existential crisis and in general exploration of one's values and existential beliefs. Some therapists even provide existential therapy, a philosophically-rooted approach that focuses on meaning, freedom, connection, and mortality.

Deciding to enter therapy can be challenging. The idea of talking about things that you may be struggling to find words for or feel embarrassed about can be so hard. Together we'll find a way to give voice to the parts that feel messy and create a space where it feels safe to share your struggles.

Many of my patients feared that coming to therapy would make them lose who they were and what made them unique but have learned that talking about their feelings and allowing themselves the space to explore them has allowed them to flourish in ways they hadn't before.

I believe the capacity for healing happens in the context of interpersonal relationships. That is why it is so important to find the right fit between patient and therapist. I’m happy to answer any questions and make sure you feel like it's a good fit.

If you are struggling to succeed in work or school, having problems with relationships, dealing with anxiety, depression or loneliness, therapy can help you to get unstuck so that you can feel stronger and more in control of your life.   In my practice, I work to create a safe space where you can explore the things that are getting in your way, as well as identify the strengths that you already possess.

Together we can work to discover old patterns of relating that may be holding you back from feeling confident and being able to achieve your goals.  My style is warm and empathic. I believe in the power of therapy to help you heal, grow, and become your best self.

Therapy can be a powerful force for good, so long as we never lose sight of the paramountcy of human connection and avoid retreating into narcissism. So many of us desire to feel more connected, less anxious, and less alienated, but we simply do not know how to achieve this reality. This is especially true for some of us who have experienced attachment disruptions, or even more severe forms of trauma. Or, perhaps we see a path forward, but that path vanishes suddenly without warning and is replaced by malaise and renewed uncertainty, or, even worse, despair. Our work together will focus on developing that path in such a way where it will endure even in the face of adversity and the intrusion of the past into the present.

Therapy can be such an asset. As the stigma of mental health decreases, we understand how common stress is for everyone. With a fresh perspective and some guidance, you can see ways past this. You can rise, enjoy life better, and even thrive. In a conversation with humor and humanity, my patients begin to get there.

Young children can be as exasperating as they are adorable, and -- as a mom myself -- I know that loving your kid deeply doesn’t mean that you love every single part of your kid, every minute of every day. The truth is, every child is different, as is every mom and every dad; “one size fits all” just doesn’t apply to parenting. Whether we meet once, once a month, or once a week, I can help you wade through the books, blogs, and unsolicited playground advice to figure out the parenting style and strategies that work best for you, your child, and your family.

I have been a therapist working with couples and individuals for more than twenty-five years. During that time I have found it is important to balance understanding a couple as a whole and the two individuals which make up the relationship. I help a couple focus on ineffective and dysfunctional communication patterns that result in a sense of frustration and discouragement. I encourage each person to express their emotional needs more directly and openly. People often express their anger and criticism about their partner's behavior, but have difficulty asking for what they need in a clear, non-attacking way. When people can express their underlying needs for support and understanding, and the insecurities and vulnerable feelings they usually hide, their partners then are more likely to respond in a positive, affirming way.

This approach helps couples develop constructive problem resolution skills. People become able to assert themselves more comfortably, while understanding and appreciating their partner's perspective. Couples often find they learn new things about their partner’s personality even when they have been together a long time.

In individual therapy I also help people focus on patterns in their significant relationships that result in feelings of frustration, distance, and sadness. Most  people come into therapy because they are experiencing emotionally painful feelings such as anxiety, depression, and anger which they are having difficulty managing. They know what hurts, but they may not be aware of the meanings that they give to certain situations. It is the meaning that we assign to a situation that causes pain, more than a specific action or behavior that someone does to us. Understanding our experience and motivations more clearly, helps us communicate our needs more directly to the important people in our lives. This both decreases our pain and increases a sense of connection to others. Before we can communicate more clearly with others, we have to be able to identify and formulate our experience clearly to ourselves. This leads to increased self-esteem and self-acceptance.

Psychotherapy is a practice of putting our interior lives into language — the things we generally have a difficult time speaking are often the things that cause us to suffer, feel depressed, or create anxiety in our lives. Many people find that creating space in our day-to-day lives to speak and to be heard by a thoughtful, compassionate, curious, and interested professional alleviates these negative experiences and allows us to live fuller, more complex and more meaningful lives. My work centers around creating a serious, interesting, useful, and safe space to begin exploring the depths of what causes you to suffer, or the things that one cannot yet speak that create a feeling of being trapped, stuck, or blocked.
