Therapists Specializing in Men'S Health in Washington DC

Mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of gender or sex. That said, men experience higher rates of some mental health conditions and tend to be less likely to receive treatment than women. This could be because men’s mental health remains, to some extent, tied up with traditional gender expectations and roles. As a result, some men are apprehensive about speaking about their emotions, disclosing their difficulties, or seeking help. Many experience loneliness, depression, or anxiety. Seeking the opinion of a professional regarding a mental health concern is an important step towards recovery and part of an important recognization that everyone struggles at times.

Many different therapeutic modalities can be beneficial for the range of potential mental health challenges. The best-fitting therapy will depend on each individuals’ preferences, as well as the specific difficulties experienced.

Discuss the options with one of the therapists below who specializes in men’s mental health, many of whom are men themselves. Some men prefer to find a male therapist with whom they feel comfortable developing a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship. Therapists in Washington DC have been vetted by the Zencare team for clinically rigorous, quality care. Finding the right therapist is like dating. It can take a few tries to get the right fit. With the right therapist your life can be transformed because you have someone who can provide support and guidance as you go. I act like your personal cheerleader encouraging you to adopt healthy patterns and try to avoid destructive ones.

I help people who are struggling with a variety of personal, work and school issues like stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. I also help clients who are grieving, going though a difficult time, have parenting questions, communication problems, or dealing with infidelity and/or divorce.  I try to understand my clients' current challenges and examine their patterns of behavior and thinking that led them to their current situation. Together we look at family patterns and environmental factors to determine their best next steps to feel better. I incorporate mind-body suggestions if the client is open to that.

Finding a therapist can be intimidating and a difficult process and I commend you on starting this process. I always tell potential clients the importance of making sure that they feel comfortable with whoever they choose as a therapist. Please keep that in mind whether you speak to me or someone else!

As for me, I'm a clinical social worker (aka a therapist). I am not your typical therapist, I grew up in the DC Area playing sports most of my life and eventually collegiate football. I felt the call at a young age to help others and was drawn towards the world of psychology. Through my training and experiences I saw a trend that men were suffering with their mental health in silence - often being punished for their expressions of sadness or angst. I knew that this population was being underserved, yet struggling the most. Men complete suicide at a rate 3x that of women yet participate in outpatient therapy less than half of women.

Since 2015 I have been working with men to proactively address their unique mental health needs, looking past these outward expressions and getting to the root for each young man. I strive to show each of my clients how therapy is a useful and practical tool to deal with whatever they're struggling with. Starting therapy can be intimidating and the process can be life change.

All you need to bring to therapy is an open mind and a willingness to explore. I am a very interactive therapist; I give a lot of feedback and guidance. In my work with individuals, I help people see how they developed the coping skills and defense mechanisms they did, and how to begin recognizing them in a less judgmental way. I also teach couples new communication skills: how to rebuild trust and safety after a breach, how to mirror one another, ways to validate and empathize. We work on breaking bad patterns and create healthier ones using positivity and appreciations.

It's so rewarding to help children, couples and families heal old and current wounds, and to see my clients use therapy as a way to soar to new emotional freedoms. Please don't be in pain anymore: contact me so we can set goals together, develop healthier ways of coping, and watch you blossom

Good therapy works. However, there are often barriers between you and "good therapy." It's hard to find a therapist that is a fitting match, hard to look at your life with honesty, and hard to work on becoming a better person. I understand that this process of finding a therapist is oftentimes daunting, frustrating, and difficult. Whether we end up working together or not, I want to use this message to encourage you to take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and keep at it. It typically works best for clients to schedule consultations with a couple different therapists, and try to get a sense for which pairing feels like a good fit. Trust your gut - you'll know it when you find it. All the while, I hope you remember one thing that I find to be abundantly clear: good therapy works!

Thanks for your interest. I hope to help you gain a better understanding of yourself and assist you towards your personal goals. I work as a psychodynamic therapist, meaning that together we can examine how unconscious beliefs, past relationships, and our interactions in the present moment affect you and your current concerns. Additionally, I use CBT and mindfulness strategies to help develop healthy coping skills. I specialize in the LGBTQ population, but welcome all who are seeking support and wanting to build personal insight.

Finding a new therapist can often be a daunting task. In order for therapy to be helpful I understand that it is important for clients to find a therapist with whom they feel comfortable sharing the things that are most important to them in an environment that is safe, supportive, and non-judgmental. As your therapist, I see it as my job to work collaboratively with you on addressing the issues that bring you to therapy and to establish a therapeutic relationship composed of empathy, trust, and understanding.

If you are struggling with life's inevitable challenges, whether it be due to past or recent trauma, anxiety, depression, or simple difficulty transitioning from one life event to the next, let's work together on a unique plan to embrace these struggles head on by learning new, healthy coping skills. We may have to address some of these past events, however, this can be done while learning new skills. What if we "accept" the inevitable, stop the "struggle" with the thoughts, and "commit" to living a life full of value?

I practice from the idea that we behave according to what we "think" about situations AND how the "fight" against these thoughts causes us suffering.

Look...society tells us in many ways that in order to be successful, we have to be able to "do it all at any cost!" However, the "at any cost" part usually includes poor self-care and issues in our intimate, professional, and social relationships, we find ourselves lost. Let’s work together to discover your ability to start LIVING your life!
