Therapists Specializing in Pregnancy, Perinatal, Postpartum Mental Health in Los Angeles

The perinatal period refers to the duration of a woman’s pregnancy as well as the weeks and months following birth. Although the time leading up to and following a baby’s birth is often joyful, the perinatal period can also come with mental health challenges for both mothers and fathers. Postpartum depression is perhaps the best-known perinatal mental health condition, but psychological and emotional reactions vary widely and can occur at any time before, during, or after pregnancy. Some amount of anxiety and stress is a normal part of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting, but when these conditions become especially frequent or intense, they can have an adverse effect on an individual’s wellbeing.

Many parents struggling with perinatal mental health challenges find it helpful to seek help from a trained therapist who can help them process their experiences and cope with the emotions of having a baby. Though therapists differ in their approaches to perinatal mental health challenges, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy are among the most effective and commonly used modalities. Therapists can help explore the challenges experienced by new parents, provide guidance to modify unhelpful thoughts, and help clients develop or foster social support and relationships.

Find therapists in Los Angeles who specialize in pregnancy, perinatal, postpartum mental health below. Therapists have been vetted by the Zencare team for clinically rigorous, quality care. Visit their profiles to watch an introductory video and book a free initial call to find a good fit!

If you are suffering from anxiety or depression you should know you are not alone. Millions of people in the US and about half a billion people in the world have significant depression or anxiety. Anxiety and depression may be caused by psychological, physical, social, and spiritual factors. Struggling with depression or anxiety can cause intense suffering, affect your ability to have or enjoy relationships and disrupt your ability to function at work or home. Problems with your emotional health can prevent you from pursuing your dreams and living life to the fullest.
Finding hope is the first step in getting better. And there are reasons to be hopeful. Research has consistently demonstrated the benefit of multiple treatment approaches. It has also shown that the most effective treatment is the combination of psychotherapy and medication treatment.

I specialize in treating anxiety and depression. I use an integrated approach that combines cognitive behavioral (CBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy with medication treatment when indicated.

You may feel like you are functioning in life, but struggling underneath. With so much uncertainty in the world, you may be experiencing more anxiety, sadness, or overwhelm. Perhaps you are struggling in your intimate relationship, with your family or friends or by yourself. No matter your situation, talking to someone can be helpful to feel more grounded, clear, and less stressed.

In allowing ourselves to feel, we create a space within to open and grow. In our busy lives, we often forget our true nature and end up feeling stuck, tired, anxious and unhappy.

As a holistic and depth oriented therapist, my role is to support my adults and couples in finding wholeness — mind, body, and spirit — creating more joy, ease, and healthy relationships. I help my clients remember their empowered authentic voice and “tap back in” to their true self.

In a safe and warm environment, my clients are able to explore their past and their present, to understand what’s missing in their life, what they truly yearn for, and what is keeping them apart from that. Through this exploration, I help clients express their inner most desires, bringing more peace, balance, and happiness to their lives.

A mental health therapist is responsible for getting a clear picture of each patient's individual needs to understand what must be discussed during therapy. Each provider has a unique way of formulating an approach to engage the patients. I see value in collaborating with patients to explore healing tactics that they find interesting.

Engaging patients to explore their strengths is an excellent strategy to build rapport and trust in a therapeutic relationship. As a therapist, I like to pay special attention to what patients desire to do and can put their whole focus on.

We don’t heal in isolation. We heal in the context of healthy and safe relationships. Together, we can lighten load that you’ve been carrying and make sense of the messiness of life. In sessions with me, you can expect to be empowered with practical tools, observations, insights and nurturing containment. I offer a safe, authentic space to unpack issues, repair emotional wounds, develop practical skills, engage in exploratory processing of patterns, and be connected with resources and information. Our work together will build on and activate your inner strength and resiliency.

Connecting with a professional therapist can shed light on patterns that may need to shift in order to align with the healthiest version of you. Weekly sessions can offer you a restorative sanctuary from which to heal, grow and break cycles of dysfunction. The therapeutic process is enlightening, transformative, and can surprisingly even be fun! The process puts you in the driver seat of your life rather than continuing to repeat unconscious patterns which are no longer serving you.

I would be honored to be a partner in your path to wellness. If you feel drawn to my approach, let's connect for a free consult.

Therapy can be a helpful way to find clarity and courage about what you are wanting for your life. I work well with people who “think too much” and are “too sensitive” or “intense”. I take a practical approach and am happy to answer any questions you may have. I’m currently offering telehealth only for clients in California and Massachusetts.

Before the first meeting I send some questionnaires through my secure online portal to get a sense of how someone is doing using standardized measures (5-10 minutes max to complete). In the first meeting for individual therapy, or Initial Evaluation (75 minutes), we will talk about what you want help with and what your life is like. I will be interactive and collaborative as we identify things you would like to work on or things you would like to change. I will be honest about whether I think I can be helpful.

For couples, I will spend 120 minutes for a first session so there is time to hear from both members of the couple about their lives and what they are needing help with. After the initial evaluation individual sessions are typically 50 minutes and couples’ sessions are 90 minutes, unless otherwise arranged.

While many clients come weekly at first, I also work with people on a bi-weekly, monthly, or even episodic basis. I invite you to reach out and see if we are a good fit.

My approach is to start where you are at. Together we will build a partnership to identify goals; develop growth; build tools; and navigate stressful or confusing challenges. These may include issues such as loss, work stress, divorce, family concerns, and life transitions.

I’ll use evidenced based modalities such as, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), psychodynamic therapy and mindfulness based practices to help you increase awareness around certain behaviors, regulate emotions, create new ways of thinking and identify patterns.

I provide a nonjudgmental, supportive space where we can work together to create change in you life.

I believe that psychotherapy is a process for learning about yourself and healing. It is my hope that through the psychotherapeutic relationship you will learn ways to deal with the difficulties in your life. I work together with patients to form a close collaborative relationship in which they become aware of the underlying sources of their difficulties, learn to work with powerful and uncomfortable emotions, and allow their inner strengths to flourish.

In this busy, face-paced world, where we are inundated by information and so much is asked of us by our jobs, relationships, families and communities, I’ve found it is incredibly beneficial (but often difficult) to prioritize time for oneself. Therapy offers a chance to give yourself a pause, to slow down, to reconnect with yourself, and to take a deeper look at your experience within a safe and supportive environment.

For many, simply making the decision to seek therapy is a major first step, and one you can feel proud of. Life can certainly have its peaks and valleys, and throughout it all, therapy can help one navigate these experiences. In sessions, we will work together and at your own pace. I will support you in facing issues that feel painful, overwhelming or confusing, and to make meaning of these experiences. I will help you access your own internal strength and resilience as you take steps in the healing process and in the challenging, yet rewarding, journey of change.

Finding a good fit with a therapist can sometimes take a little time and effort. I encourage you to reach out with any questions you may have about me or the therapeutic process, and to see if we might be a good match.
