Therapists Specializing in Self-Esteem in Boston Area

Self-esteem refers to how positively we feel about ourselves and our worth. We can all feel bad about ourselves or lack confidence at times, but people who struggle with low self-esteem feel like this regularly, or possibly even all the time. Although self-esteem is not itself a mental health condition, low levels of self-esteem are associated with some mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety.

Many people who struggle with low self-esteem find it helpful to seek out a therapist. Most therapists are trained to help with low self-esteem, but their approaches may differ – the key is to find an approach that resonates with you. Some therapists help identify and challenge the unhelpful thoughts associated with low self-esteem and help clients examine and change the core beliefs underlying them. Other clinicians might focus on helping clients develop self-compassion and an attitude of non-judgment through mindfulness or other related therapies.

I know it's not easy to make the decision to see a therapist. I don't know yet what difficult things are going on in your life right now, but there's probably more than it feels like you can manage. That's why you're here - and the last thing I would want to do is to add to that burden. As a therapist, I do my best to make you feel safe and comfortable working with me from the very first time we talk - but I also know that it may take some time for you to trust me enough to tell me everything you want me to know, or to be ready to hear any suggestions I might have for you. That's fine. We'll go at your pace, whether you're ready to dive right into your biggest challenges today, or take some time to decide whether I'm the person you trust to help you.

If you do decide to trust me, there are many different ways I might be able to help you. You may be looking for specific suggestions to help you cope with specific problems, like insomnia or anxiety attacks or conflicts with co-workers. I can probably offer some. Or you may feel the need to have someone you can share your feelings with, who won't judge you or shame you or tell you what to do. I can be that person. You may not really know what you need yet - you might just know that you're not living the life you want to live, but not really know why or what will help. I can help you sort through what your goals are, what's getting in your way, and what can help you achieve them. For some people, a few sessions of therapy is all they need to learn some new skills that help get them past a challenge. For others, therapy may be an ongoing source of valuable support for many years. But we'll take it one session at a time. The first step is reaching out and setting up an appointment. I look forward to getting to know you and finding out how I can help you.

Every person has the strength and healing wisdom inside them to deal with life's greatest struggles. My job is to help you reconnect to those strengths and reinforce them so that you live your life in a way that is true to you. I view people not through a lens of pathology, but one of strength and optimism.

Therapy is not magic, but sometimes it can feel that way. What is important is the therapeutic match--it is a large predictor of therapeutic success. It is the safety and trust that allows for opening and insight. I encourage all potential clients to explore, shop around, really trust their own inner sense of what feels like a good place to land.

Please reach out to set up a free 15 minute consultation with me directly to discuss working together, or if you have any questions or are curious.

Thanks for taking the time to learn about my clinical practice and how we can work together. Picking a therapist is a very personal choice. You need to feel that your therapist understands your experience, your challenges and moves you to a new way of seeing yourself and your strengths.

I provide psychotherapy for college aged adults, adults and couples. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss. I provide a non-judgmental, safe, warm and compassionate place to look at the challenges in your life: the depression that is keeping you isolated, the trauma that makes you withdraw and feel alone, the anxiety that won’t let you sleep at night. We will focus on building on your strengths, teaching you a new set of coping skills, and actively witnessing the reworking of your story.

Before Covid-19 Thor was an integral part of my psychotherapy practice and was present during all my therapy sessions. He is a nine-year-old yellow labrador/golden retriever mix who has been bred and trained as a service dog by Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). Many clients would invite him up on the couch or have him sit close by during a session. It was very common for clients to say that having Thor in the room helped them trust, feel safe, and calm. Thor doesn’t love the video sessions, so he will be with us in spirit.

I look forward to connecting with you!

"I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow/I learn by going where I have to go." These words from Theodore Roethke's beautiful poem "The Waking" describe my approach to life and to therapy. Each day is a new beginning, part of a longer journey, and an opportunity to grow into the person you're meant to be. I view therapy as a collaboration, and I genuinely appreciate the uniqueness and individuality of each of my clients. I will help you embrace health and wellness, develop self-knowledge, value your inherent worth, build advocacy and leadership skills, and constructively cope with the complex challenges of life.

Developing acceptance of where you are in your life, where you want to be, and a path to that personal vision will be the frame for most of our sessions. It is important to me that we are both clear about your values and move a pace where you feel safe but are challenged to make meaningful change.

I am a husband, father, brother and business owner who values individual perspectives, personal priorities, and kindness. I am hard to offend and quick to trust with a good sense of humor.
