Therapists Specializing in Self-Esteem in Seattle

Self-esteem refers to how positively we feel about ourselves and our worth. We can all feel bad about ourselves or lack confidence at times, but people who struggle with low self-esteem feel like this regularly, or possibly even all the time. Although self-esteem is not itself a mental health condition, low levels of self-esteem are associated with some mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety.

Many people who struggle with low self-esteem find it helpful to seek out a therapist. Most therapists are trained to help with low self-esteem, but their approaches may differ – the key is to find an approach that resonates with you. Some therapists help identify and challenge the unhelpful thoughts associated with low self-esteem and help clients examine and change the core beliefs underlying them. Other clinicians might focus on helping clients develop self-compassion and an attitude of non-judgment through mindfulness or other related therapies.

My goal is to offer you the comfort and encouragement you need to heal in the midst of your circumstances while providing you with practical tools to help you live life as fully as possible. I want you to know that what you are experiencing is a normal reaction to hard circumstances. One of my personal passions is helping people become mentally and emotionally free from the things that have weighed them down and caused them shame! Shame is the emotion that motivates you to want to hide, keep secrets and prevents you from sharing who you really are with others. This creates loneliness and feelings of disconnection. My hope is to bring more freedom and confidence into your life!

People come to therapy with all sorts of challenges and aspirations to find more meaning and fulfillment in their lives. I see my role as a privileged helper to interactively support my clients on their journeys. Connection is critical. If we are a good fit and as we establish trusting connection, we can begin to address the changes you are wanting to make. My clinical approach is flexible as I am an integrative therapist, employing a range of modalities, adjusting to what best serves each individual client’s needs. I prefer in office therapy but am entirely comfortable with tele-mental health and can work in a hybrid approach. I hope you find the fit you are looking for and if that becomes me, I look forward to meeting and working with you!

Asking for help is a vulnerable first step. Ultimately, the goal of therapy is to make you feel better about yourself and your life. While the journey can be a tough one with ups and downs, the payoff is often great. It’s my honor to journey with you through the pain and the joy, maybe with a few occasional laughs.

I take pride in working with a diverse array of people in my practice and welcome individuals from any racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as all sexual and gender identities.

I ask that my clients commit to weekly 50 minute sessions. Meeting weekly helps us create a strong relationship that allows the space and safety to delve deeper into the issues bringing you into therapy, as well as the space and safety for you to create a better sense of self-understanding, resiliency and compassion.

Currently, I am only seeing clients via Telehealth. That means you and I will have sessions via a secure web platform. When state guidelines suggest it is safe to resume in-person counseling, we will discuss the possibility of transitioning to an in-office setting.

If you're unsure therapy or my approach are right for you, I'm happy to speak with you via phone for a free, 15-minute consultation to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Finding our place in the world is a life-long endeavor. We are all striving to optimize our lives and the various roles we play within relationships, work and life. Influenced by psychodynamic thinkers, I encourage clients to explore their early experiences as a means to understand their current life situations and relational dynamics. Transitions in life, relationships and self are jarring and difficult, yet it is through these destabilizing moments that we are given the opportunity to make a change.

My eclectic approach is rooted in existential, humanistic, and transpersonal ideals of psychology that empower individuals to find and make meaning within their world. A Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), I navigate the world with an increased sensitivity and awareness of the subtleties and nuances of my surroundings - I bring this to you.

Rather than an outsider looking in, I come into the work as someone who has, as Carl Jung once said, traversed the "dark night of the soul". I am intimately aware of the depths to the void that is mental health. You do not need to go it alone, finding the right support makes all the difference.

Therapy should not be yet another place where you feel the weight of judgement, or evaluation—but instead a safe space where you feel greater freedom to explore and identify the details of life that may feel entangling and option narrowing. The work you and I do together will be collaborative and sensitive to your needs and concerns—with the intention of creating a comfortable and optimal space for you to name and work towards the goals that inspired your search for a therapist. Your life is important and I look forward to working with you.

Note that I provide free 20 minute initial consultations to give you an opportunity to verify whether or not I am a good fit for your therapy needs.

My best,

Jeremy Mays, LMFT

Thank you for beginning this journey! If this is your first time in therapy, welcome! This process can be pretty scary, to talk to someone you do not know about things that make you uncomfortable, sad, embarrassed, angry and overjoyed- but let me tell you that this process is here to help you grow. My job is to make sure I maintain a non-judgmental, safe space that is challenging but comforting.

If you are returning to therapy, welcome back! I'm glad that you are resuming your personal growth path.

Therapy will be both difficult and enjoyable at times. As therapists, we embrace these opposing states as a sign of good work. We encourage you to allow yourself to experience any and all emotions or thoughts freely. Welcome!

In a nutshell, an intimacy avoidant behavior is using something on the outside to fix something inside.  Intimacy avoidance behaviors include over-spending or over-shopping, problematic sexual or relationships behaviors (including excessive pornography use, codependency and avoidance of sex or relationships), substance abuse and eating disorders.

I deeply believe in your ability to find peace, develop your intuition and wisdom to make your own choices about your life, and create new meaning and find healing from trauma, including systemic and intergenerational trauma. I am a strengths-based, humanistic, person-centered counselor. I work with clients throughout the states of Washington and Oregon using a secure teletherapy platform. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and strive for inclusivity and curiosity for all people, both in my personal life and in working with clients. I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, transitions, grief, indecision, school/work stress, and relationship conflicts, among other issues.

I believe that you are ultimately your greatest source of wisdom and in our work together, we can uncover what is keeping you stuck and find what you need to move forward. I believe in the power of empathy and a strong therapeutic relationship when processing pain, confusion, or heartbreak, feeling peace in the present, and finding hope for your future.

Through warmth and encouraging self-compassion and self-reflection, I see myself as a partner in your process of discovering how to live with greater peace and self-compassion. It takes courage to take the steps to find an enhanced sense of wellbeing. I would be happy to meet with you to see if I might be a good fit for you as a therapist.
