Single parents who are raising children without the support of a partner, friend, or spouse can support each other in the sharing of common feelings and experiences in this group. This online group utilizes a mindfulness approach in order to help parents better manage current stress in their lives due to COVID-19. Group discussion, guided breathing and meditation, and tapping (EFT) are all used to promote calm in the face of these great challenges.
Ann Smith is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. She works with adults and children and specializes in depression, anxiety, adoption, learning disabilities, and mindfulness. She has worked extensively with adults who are looking to build confidence at work and/or in relationships.
Ann is a relational therapist and has an interactive approach. She begins therapy helping one understand the current stressors in life; how symptoms are triggered, an understanding of one’s history as it relates to current difficulties, with a plan to move forward. The patient therapist relationship is at the core of the work.
Ann believes that a mind-body approach to symptoms is important, and is individualized in therapy according to the needs and interests of each patient; e.g. how depression and/or anxiety can manifest in the body. She utilizes these mindfulness practices to help one feel more in control of feelings in the moment: Breathing techniques; tapping (the Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT); and guided meditation.
When working with children, Ann applies a developmental lens. She helps children become more aware of negative and intrusive thoughts and includes cognitive strategies, such as self-talk, in addition to guided meditation and breathing, and tapping in her approach. She collaborates with parents to help them understand their child’s challenges, and develops a plan for helping their child manage behavior and feelings at home. She also collaborates with schools and other therapists when requested by families.
