AJ Metthe is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Rhode Island who specializes in depression, anxiety, complex trauma, bipolar disorder, PTSD, stress, life transitions, and working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, specializing in working with transgender and non-binary clients. In addition, he has experience conducting brief mental health assessments and writing referrals for gender-affirming surgical interventions. He has experience working with college-age students—though he works with adults across the lifespan. He also particularly enjoys working with individuals with a history of complex trauma using attachment theory.
AJ’s treatment approach is grounded in psychodynamic work, but he also incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He prefers long-term work and likes to incorporate insight-oriented work with solution-focused therapies to help clients gain greater self-awareness while also developing healthier coping strategies. When appropriate, AJ will utilize mindfulness practices to help his clients better manage their depression and/or anxiety.
AJ’s warmth and compassion is apparent the moment a client steps into his office. He offers non-judgmental, safe space where clients can explore who they are and what they want out of life. Formerly, he was on the board of Youth Pride, Inc. and was involved in strengthening Rhode Island's transgender support network for many years before pursuing his graduate studies in social work.
