Professional statement

Dr. Arthur Heiserman is a Clinical Psychologist in Manhattan who works with children, adolescents, college students, and adults across the lifespan, both individually and as a couple. He specializes in anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, and self-esteem.

While Dr. Heiserman’s treatment approach is grounded in Psychoanalytic Therapy, he adapts to a client’s needs and goals to ensure they are receiving the highest standard of care. To do so, he incorporates elements of body-centered therapies, like Somatic Experiencing, mindfulness practices, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Family Systems, Supportive Therapy, and other treatment modalities. He helps clients become more grounded during sessions by working with them to feel more connected with their bodies and what is happening in the present moment.

Dr. Heiserman has a calming presence that makes clients feel safe and supported. He has advanced training in Somatic Experiencing in addition to a certificate in Psychoanalysis.

Message to clients

While many people come to therapy seeking relief from specific emotional problems such as depression, anxiety or stress, or in order to come to terms with a traumatic or otherwise painful history, others come with broad dissatisfaction with their lives while at the same time having some sense that there is a better life they could be living, and an unlived version of themselves that they could become. Psychotherapy is a wonderful opportunity for you to partner with an accepting, non-judgemental and dedicated professional who is experienced in helping others recognize their needs and strengths and to discover opportunities for new experiences.
I pay careful attention to, and collaboratively explore, the subtleties and intricacies of personal and interpersonal experiences as they unfold in the moment. In a creative and sometimes playful manner, we will begin to imagine and explore new ways of seeing yourself, open up new ways of relating to others, and in the process overcome negative expectations that have been holding you back. I firmly believe that every one of us has the potential to live a life of our choosing and I will provide a safe and confidential environment in which you will be actively and creatively listened to, and then provide the feedback, guidance and emotional support needed to move your life in new directions. When working well this process of change involves moments of uncertainty, discovery, playfulness, creativity and surprise.
