Professional statement

Augustin (AJ) Lianzo is a licensed mental health counselor in the state of New York. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Siena College and his master’s degree in mental health counseling from Brooklyn College. Beginning in 2016, during his undergraduate years, AJ interned in clinical group settings, co-facilitating CBT group therapy sessions. This early training and experience laid the foundation for his clinical approach as well as exposing him to the impact therapy can have on people's lives and the invaluable lesson of how critical it is for him to be in service to those in need of it. In his graduate program, AJ worked within his school's college counseling center, and later he interned at The Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai West. The later experience helped ground his therapeutic style to be more eclectic, utilizing experiential/gestalt techniques, psychodynamic, and attachment models to his well-established CBT approach. After graduating, he worked at Port Morris Wellness Center at Montefiore Hospital, then Community Counseling and Mediation, and spent some time within a private practice before starting his own in 2021.

AJ's array of experience in group therapy, to a college counseling center, to addiction counseling, to a community mental health clinic, to private practice all helped to forge and construct his view on treatment. He believes that therapy is a cooperative process through collaboration with client and therapist. AJ's outlook on the therapeutic process is that we all have the capacity to change and adjust. Therapy allows us the opportunity to engage with beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that create patterns of inflexibility or lack of acceptance. By growing awareness to the detailed ways these constructs sustain inflexibility, AJ believes one can foster growth and adaptability so that change and acceptance can be adopted when needed.

Message to clients

In my experience in the field, the one thing I have found to matter as much as instilling confidence in my client's ability to adjust is my responsibility to adjust. Everyone is different, and I believe it is important for me to tailor my knowledge to best fit what works for you. In doing so, I believe you can learn to notice the power of the here-and-now moment. I believe you can learn to the depths of your patterns of which you want to change or heal. It takes time, and it takes work, and even still, it is something I have full confidence anyone is capable of achieving. My goal is to help clients learn the essence of mental flexibility and the depths of their own current rigidity, whether that is in the form of fears, anxieties, self-deprecating thoughts, depression, hopelessness, etc. Therapy can help you to discover your sense of self-worth, agency, meaning, purpose, and capacity to accept. In treatment, you can learn to adjust and adapt your belief and behavioral patterns to suit your values and needs, and learn to accept that which cannot be changed. One of the most challenging things affecting us all is the uncertainty of life. Many folks struggle with this uncertainty and how to respond to it in a way that works for each of them. In treatment, I believe in working together to recognize the potential of your adaptability in order to foster more flexible thinking and positive self-image.
