Professional statement

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Averry Cox sees clients in Washington state and Maryland, working with individuals and couples on uncovering their internalized messages that prevent them from achieving goals or developing and maintaining the intimate relationships and friendships they desire. Through this vulnerable and thorough process, clients are able to curate a deeper understanding of themselves, their unhelpful patterns, and their true desires while being affirmed in their genuine authenticity. She works best with clients who are ready to dig deep and challenge themselves, as well as fellow artists and creatives. She also works with other therapists on their self-of-the-therapist difficulties and feelings of imposter syndrome.

Averry uses a combination of therapeutic styles and theoretical modalities that are tailored to each client or couple's needs. She uses humor and a warm, but direct approach that invites clients to bring their true selves without judgement. Expect the space to be anything but "stale" and overly formal. Her main focus is to understand clients to aid them in better understanding themselves to make decisions that get them closer to being their natural selves. Through understanding impactful messages and trauma from their upbringing and society, Averry helps the client redefine and uncover their honest identity within a space that encourages them to use their voice. Averry believes in transparency and practices from a humanistic perspective in this way, believing that the therapeutic relationship is better improved by the client being the expert, and the therapist bearing witness.

Averry lives in Washington, DC and is sees her clients virtually Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 am-4:30 pm EST (6-1:30 pm PST).

Message to clients

As a neurodivergent, queer, biracial woman of color, and single parent, I understand the frustration of feeling misunderstood or not cared for in society. I truly enjoy helping others understand and own their identities. You deserve a voice, you deserve room, and you deserve time.

This space with me is for you to learn about how you've been programmed to function or *not* function in unhealthy ways. In learning about your conditioning, we take the time to unlearn and rewire so that your relationships feel closer, healthier, and real. You learn to be in your body and be present for life's moments. When you show up in your entirety and witness others in the space show up the same (whether that's me or your partner); humanity, compassion, and honesty become the norm. Your relationships and presence become a choice you make with intentionality giving life more liberated meaning.

I can't wait to get to know you and work with you.
