Professional statement

Dr. Christen Mullane is a clinical psychologist who practices virtually in multiple states. She has particular expertise in working with clients who have experienced medical trauma, are grieving loss of functioning due to medical problems, who are adjusting to new onset medical illnesses, or who are caring for individuals struggling with aging and illness. Over the course of her clinical career, she has worked in multiple medical settings including emergency rooms, medical hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient primary care clinics. Given the fact that she has "been there," medical professionals and front line workers in need of support may consider establishing care with Dr. Mullane.

Dr. Mullane has chosen to practice virtually in order to bring care to her clients. She recognizes that during periods of upheaval and stress, it can be hard to get out of bed, let alone get to therapy. Virtual care provides an opportunity for those with mobility and health issues to gain needed support, allows caregivers to meet without having to leave a loved one, and improves continuity of care for nursing or medical professionals who may travel or move for work.

Dr. Mullane utilizes evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as mindfulness and awareness building strategies, in her work. She aids clients in reflecting on their values, thoughts, emotions, and behavior patterns in the interest of acceptance and change. She regularly reviews available clinical research to inform her practice. She values diverse viewpoints and experiences, actively works to increase her own cultural competence, and welcomes any and all to her practice.

Message to clients

Whether we are experiencing them directly or caregiving for others through them, difficult and traumatic medical experiences have a far-reaching impact on jobs, relationships, and our sense of meaning or purpose.

If you have been through an experience like childbirth, heart attack or stroke, HIV diagnosis, or long-term medical illness, you have faced firsthand the challenges of building a care team that you trust and coming into a new relationship with your body. My role is to partner with you as you face these challenges. For frontline workers or those caregiving for individuals as they move through physical changes, it can be difficult to find balance. I can help you find your footing as you navigate caring for self and other, face difficult medical decisions, or move through anticipatory grief in the context of potentially complex relationship dynamics.

"What kind of impact will this illness have, and how do I set the boundaries I need in order to get through it?"

"What does it mean to 'live with' this new normal?"

"This is happening on top of everything else! I am completely overwhelmed, in pain, and I can't sleep."

"I had trauma before. This just makes dealing with it harder."

If any of this sounds familiar, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for a free phone consultation. I am happy to address any questions or concerns you may have prior to initiating therapy, and I look forward to meeting you soon.
