Professional statement

Courtenay Baber is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Courtenay specializes in Equine-assisted Therapy for clients who suffer from the ongoing impacts of trauma. Many of Courtenay’s clients experienced trauma as children, including sexual abuse. Often, Courtenay’s clients have tried traditional psychotherapy but find that they progress more easily with non-traditional, animal-assisted therapy modalities or EMDR or a combination of modalities specifically tailored for their needs.

Courtenay’s approach to therapy blends animal-assisted therapy with Internal Family Systems, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She creates a calm, welcoming atmosphere where clients feel comfortable talking about their feelings and mental health symptoms. Her approach to therapy is trauma-informed so clients feel safe as they discuss potentially painful memories. Her goal is to help clients move past their trauma symptoms and towards meaningful, fulfilling, comfortable lives.

Courtenay enjoys bringing humor into therapy sessions, when appropriate. She builds strong trust with her clients, who also often bond with the animals that tag along to the sessions. Courtenay has extensive experience helping clients move past trauma.

Message to clients

I believe that all people have the ability to change. I do not have the answers however I will help you to answer the questions you have. I will ask you challenging questions. I will provide a safe calm space to answer these questions and to get to know yourself better. It is often through getting to know ourselves we begin to change and to heal.

I believe that we often think about things and in the process of thinking, we do not feel. I believe it is important to do both. I believe that as a part of healing there needs to be feeling. In therapy, we will get the chance to do both, to openly express feelings and thoughts, and to heal.

I believe that it is important that I meet clients where they are and move at the speed they are ready. I will not push harder than you are capable but I will nudge you to keep you moving towards the goals you want to achieve. I will believe you when even you may not believe that change is possible.

Believing in yourself is the beginning. Change is possible. Life can be better.
