Professional statement

Dr. Cynthia Shaw is a Psychologist and offers virtual services for New York, and all PsyPact residents, including, but not limited to New Jersey, Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas, and Maine. Dr. Shaw specializes in helping those who are feeling anxious and "stuck." Many of Dr. Shaw’s clients recently went through a major life transition, bringing them to therapy as they manage their emotions after the change. These transitions include beginning or ending college, moving to a new city, or changes in relationship status, and leave the individual struggling with feelings of loneliness, dread, or grief. Dr. Shaw helps those whose low self-esteem makes it hard for them to feel comfortable in social situations, or whose perfectionism leads to feelings of burnout.

Dr. Shaw’s approach to therapy draws from Existential and Philosophical perspectives, which means that she encourages clients to examine their mental health and life situations through large questions about life’s meaning and purpose. She also practices Experiential and Relational Processing therapy to help clients deepen their relationships with others. Clients learn skills from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness therapy practices, growing their self-awareness and shifting their attention towards what’s important for them. Dr. Shaw uses a person-centered, strengths-based style, letting the client lead the conversation and manage their healing journey. She provides supportive perspective and encouragement, building an environment of mutual trust and respect.

Dr. Shaw earned a PsyD from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Her goal is to help clients reach greater insight into their lives and to grow through this insight. She enjoys bringing humor, creativity, and humility into sessions so clients feel comfortable talking about what’s on their mind.
