Professional statement

Dr. Deborah Weisinger is a Licensed Psychologist with an office in San Francisco, CA. She pursued post graduate training to become a Psychoanalyst to enhance her clinical capacity to provide in-depth psychotherapy. Deborah works with those who are experiencing life transitions, whether beginning, evaluating or ending relationships, career changes, decisions to return to school, cross cultural issues or facing unexpected losses. She pays particular attention to the ways in which these transitions can impact patients emotionally and experientially, often bringing up feelings of self doubt, anxiety and depression along with hope and excitement about what's to come. She works with individuals in close partnership, discussing goals for treatment as well as treatment approach to foster a good fit for each individual's experience in therapy.

Deborah's approach is based upon Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Theories which foster an interest in and curiosity about what's going on inside, the many emotional and experiential contributors from the past and the present that contribute to current feelings of distress. She listens closely and is interested in learning with you about the thoughts and feelings that cause difficulties within, in relationships and in life in general.

With a commitment to life-long development and growth, Deborah seeks to create a supportive space in which to facilitate the emotional work and commitment necessary to work through and cope with the complicated and, at times, confusing feelings that may impede the pursuit of greater fulfillment.

Message to clients

Deciding to pursue psychotherapy may be a clear cut choice or one that you have reached after much thought. Regardless of how you reached this decision, you likely feel many things about starting psychotherapy, including some unease about confiding in someone that you don't know. I want to acknowledge that feeling of vulnerability along with the courage that it takes to ask for help.

In my experience, it is important in our work together to learn about any feelings that you have in beginning a therapeutic relationship as well as at any time in our work together. I will listen closely to what you say, how you say it and, sometimes, what you don't say in order to inform my thoughts that I will share with you. Because the therapeutic relationship is a relationship, albeit an unusual one, anything that goes on in our work together is worth exploring since it often reflects your familiar relationship challenges. When we're experiencing this together, it gives us an opportunity to further understand how your thoughts, feelings and previous experiences contribute to familiar struggles.

My approach to therapy involves commitment. I believe that particularly for on-going distress or discontent in life, it can be most helpful to invest as fully as possible in pursuing greater capacity to cope with life's challenges and in gaining more peace of mind.
