Message to clients

I decided to become a psychologist because I loved talking to people about their inner experiences and when I was working on my own issues, I saw a psychologist who was extremely helpful. I wanted to reduce suffering in others as she had helped me reduce mine. I was lucky enough to do most of my clinical training--externships, internship and posdoc--with the Veterans Administration in California and Louisiana. I became very interested in how trauma affects our psyches and our relationships. I have specialized in trauma and stressor-related disorders including PTSD and anxiety.

We don't yet know why some people who are traumatized develop PTSD and others do not. One theory is that protective factors--resources such as positive social support and adaptive coping--may help prevent the development of PTSD after a traumatic event. There is not a link between the number or intensity of traumas and PTSD, unexpectedly. There is some data that show that the tendency to dissociate during trauma may be a factor in the development of PTSD.

When therapy clients are asked what makes the biggest difference to them, it's not the interventions or therapeutic orientation of the therapist: it's the relationship. I personally follow the model of viewing my clients with unconditional positive regard and work to provide a completely nonjudgmental space for them to grow.
