Professional statement

Heather Jackson is a LMHC in Rhode Island and New York. She has a Certificate of Graduate Studies in Counseling, Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Arts in Counseling, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Feminist, Women, and Queer Studies.

Heather has experience and training working with all ages and most issues but has her most extensive training and experience working with children and adolescents and people who have experienced trauma. She has experience working with children as young as 1 year old and adolescents who struggle with emotional regulation, aggression, and safety concerns. Heather has worked with people of all ages who have been traumatized through interpersonal violence, systematic trauma, as well as familial and cultural trauma.

Heather also has training in eating disorders with people of all ages and identities. Heather believes in a holistic approach with clients with eating disorders and will encourage working with a nutritionist/dietician, as well as a medical provider.

Heather believes in the person-centered approach and believes that an individual knows themselves better than anyone else and that they and their knowledge must be the center of any counseling efforts. Heather uses a variety of counseling approaches including parenting and behavioral management strategies, somatic work, EMDR, CBT, and DBT. She believes people need a variety of skills and tools and values using multiple theories and approaches (person-centered, ACT, Harm Reduction). Heather is also trained as a childbirth educator and yoga instructor. Heather is currently training to become a Full Spectrum Doula.

Heather has experiences in a variety of settings including a university counseling center, community mental health clinics, in-home counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and more. Her graduate school experience was centered around social justice and the various systematic oppressions people experience in addition to mental health.

Message to clients

As a mental health counselor, I very much value my own experiences with the world and these experiences inform my work with you. I think being vulnerable and going through my own counseling is important. I believe that the environment, systems of oppression, and the world we will live in deeply affects our mental health. Going to counseling can be intimidating. I’ve been there. I take a non-hierarchical approach and I very much value autonomy and want to assist you in experiencing the world and yourself in the way you want to! Life can be challenging and while I cannot take away those challenging moments, I can assist you in experiencing them in a less oppressive and frightening way. I value a holistic approach and believe that self-work can be done beyond talk therapy. I am licensed in RI and NY (RI MHC01033, NY 012682). I'm very aligned with the LGBTQ population, sex workers, and people in poverty.
