Professional statement

Josh Millrod is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist who blends talk, music and mindfulness to help adults and adolescents work through challenges related to anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and major life changes. His creative, trauma-informed approach caters to people who overthink, get tied up in knots looking for the right word or are easily overwhelmed. He works with a mix of clients from those who have never before been to therapy to people who have tried a variety of approaches, but haven't seen the change they had hoped for. He also provides ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, a form of legal psychedelic psychotherapy, for adult clients who would benefit from breaking out of their ordinary ways of thinking and feeling.

Josh's approach is rooted in the idea that people come to therapy because of a potent combination of overwhelming feelings or experiences and not having enough support in dealing with them. His goal is to work collaboratively with clients to create a safe and supportive environment where those previously overwhelming emotions and experiences can be explored, expressed and brought to completion. This process can involve talking, listening to music, focusing on bodily sensations, creating music or artwork, guided imagery visualization and mindfulness.

Josh completed his master's in music psychotherapy at NYU and post-graduate training in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). He has presented at national conferences and been featured on VICE News in a segment about the future of psychotherapy. Prior to becoming a therapist, Josh worked in advertising as a strategic and creative lead.

Message to clients

Hi! I'm Josh. I'm glad you're here. You're taking steps towards creating more space in your life for reflection, creativity and growth, and I'd be honored to join you in it. I'm not the kind of therapist who is going to give you worksheets to fill out or sit back and passively listen as you pour your heart out. I see myself more like an experienced hiking guide. Guides don't tell you how to navigate the trail, they hike it with you. I pride myself on being there with my clients through whatever comes up. I love finding creative ways to help my clients explore and express things that they'd otherwise not be able to find the words for. If you're curious, the best thing to do is book a consultation so we can figure out together if we're a good match.
