Professional statement

Karen is a clinical psychologist located in Denver, CO and licensed in Colorado and Illinois. A Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS), she has worked in the field for over 20 years. This includes an extensive experience developing and facilitating eating disorder treatment programs at all levels of care. Karen, therefore, has the depth and breadth of knowledge to support clients in all phases of the recovery process.  Appreciating that the healing journey looks different for everyone, she explores each person’s definition of recovery through addressing themes of physical and emotional self-care, body acceptance, mood regulation, and relationship building.

Karen’s practice also focuses on trauma recovery--working with survivors of complex trauma, veterans, and first responders. She believes that people are fundamentally resilient, and thus the focus of therapy is to enhance each person’s strengths.  Karen also recognizes that many of us have never fully learned how to take care of ourselves, to truly care for ourselves.  Coping strategies we have previously reached for may sometimes become ineffective. Therapy carves out that space to slow down, reflect on what works, and learn new skills. It provides a safe way to challenge ourselves and take risks. Therapy creates an opportunity to have a voice and be heard, to re-connect, and re-build.

Karen’s therapeutic framework centers on an interpersonal, holistic lens that values developing an honest, trusting, and consistent relationship. She also incorporates mindfulness practices and cognitive-behavioral interventions to facilitate skill building. Karen values working collaboratively, and involving comprehensive “treatment teams” (e.g., dietitians, psychiatrists, family physicians) as indicated.  She welcomes the possibility of meeting you, learning about your goals and wishes, and developing a path forward together.

Message to clients

In these demanding and rapidly changing times, we can easily start to feel lost, overwhelmed, and unsure. Finding moments to breathe, (re)connect, and recharge can seem like a luxury. In choosing to start therapy, you are creating that precious time to slow down and take care of yourself. I hope to provide you that safe space to explore your goals, hopes, and fears. Through therapy, you may discover what feels missing as well as how to celebrate your strengths. We will work together to determine the path forward and find the tools that best help you reconnect with your life.
