Professional statement

Mizuho "Miho" Kanazawa is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Creative  Arts Therapist with 20+ years of experience. She welcomes adult clients of any phase in life, to her practice in New York and New Jersey. She is able to work with clients in each of these states in person and remotely.

Miho is dedicated to working with clients whose personality and life experience were shaped by more than one culture. Clients who visit her might be international students, or clients who grew up with more than two cultural influences and values.  Some clients are in the process of finding their own cultural identities.  Some of her clients have been raised by first-generation Asian parents.  Others are in a relationship where they are having challenges in the relationship due to the difference of racial, cultural and life experiences.

Miho often works with her clients to navigate topics like why they choose silence to avoid conflict in a relationship; or how they feel taken lightly because they are from different countries or cultures.

Working closely with her clients, Miho seeks to empower the multicultural person through all chapters of life: to build confidence, to be connected in important relationships and valued in the community.

Message to clients

I would love to hear your stories — and how you're feeling today. Our session will begin with your story. We will listen together without criticism or judgment. Over time, as we continue, you'll gain a new perspective and awareness, accompanied by fresh ideas and behaviors, and many practical tools. As we understand and explore the aspects of your life, the therapy room will become a safe space to rehearse your real life. You'll find viable solutions for the day-to-day issues you face outside of our session room.

I am currently providing in-person and online therapy sessions.

Please feel free to send me a message!

Specialties

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Adjustment issues - Support around adapting to new and/or challenging life circumstances; skill-building for improved stress management and reduction of anxiety

College student mental health - Specialized strategies for common issues of young adulthood, including school and career stressors, support around healthy relationships, existential concerns, drug or alcohol issues, eating disorders, and anxiety and/or depression

Interracial/intercultural relationship - Specializing in intercultural and interracial couples therapy. Provide safe space to practice listening and developing empathy in partnership. Couples will learn about the emotional and reactive patterns of oneself and in each partner with curiosity. Couples will practice, especially in the times of emotional intensity, effective ways to communicate to promote a state of connection. Miho often gives practical, small "homework" between sessions.

Culturally sensitive counseling - Miho understands how the U.S. culture is built on money and whiteness. Many clients of color come to her practice after experiencing being misunderstood by their white therapists, who were not trained to provide counseling to diverse populations. Miho is aware of systematic oppression and microaggression (quiet form of racism) many of her clients receive daily. She is also aware of the fragile immigrataion journey many clients go through. Miho works with her client to understand difficulties, challenges, and richness they are experiencing as persons of color.
