Professional statement

Rachel Schwartz is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, Music Therapist, and Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor in Brooklyn, NY who has over a decade of experience in this field. Her specialties are in treating addiction, psychiatric issues, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, trauma, and issues of codependency.

Rachel has post-graduate advanced training in the Diane Austin Vocal Psychotherapy method Vocal Psychotherapy and Depth Psychology that uses the techniques of Vocal Holding™, Free Associative Singing™ and Psychodramatic Singing. She offers verbal psychotherapy and utilizes music therapy and the creative arts as a tool to assist you in your process. She has found that music helps clients access their subconscious thoughts and feelings more easily.

Rachel works both psychodynamically and psychoanalytically by helping clients gain a better understanding of who they are and how their symptoms have manifested. She and her clients also explore what triggers their anxiety, depression, and/or psychiatric issues, so that they are able to develop tools to help prepare for these triggering situations. Having run meditation groups in the past, she likes to incorporate mindfulness practices when appropriate to help clients learn how pain manifests in the body.

When working with clients an addiction, Rachel utilizes Motivational Interviewing, mindfulness and meditation practices, and music improvisation to help them find more adaptive ways to find relief. She also implements lyric analysis as well to help clients gain insight into themselves and what is at the root of the substance use issues.

Rachel’s unique treatment approach helps clients learn how to articulate their thoughts and access their most inner thoughts, even the subconscious ones. In addition to private practice, she has extensive experience working at inpatient programs. Her office in Williamsburg is located a few blocks from the Marcy Avenue subway station. She looks forward to meeting you.
