Professional statement

Ryan Colby is a mental health counselor in Denver, Colorado. He specializes in athlete mental health and works with performers, musicians, artists, and athletes alike. He also specializes in anxiety, stress management, mental skills training, depression and burnout/fatigue, mindfulness, transition in sport and life, fear and self doubt, identity development, and injury recovery. He also works with non-athlete/performer clients as well who face similar stressors and mental health challenges.

Ryan’s counseling practice, Ryan Colby Sports Counseling, is focused on offering support, providing resources, and overcoming difficult challenges for athletes at all levels. In his counseling work Ryan utilizes CBT, DBT, and REBT toolsets to tangibly work towards improved mental health outcomes while using narrative therapy-based perspectives to help clients navigate their unique story.

Ryan was a collegiate athlete himself and has a passion for helping athletes experience growth towards improving their mental health. He is also a member of the American Counseling Association and the Association for Applied Sports Psychology, where he is currently working towards certification as a mental performance consultant as well. Through these credentials Ryan is working towards bridging the gap between mental health counseling and mental performance work.

Message to clients

As a sports counselor and former athlete, I love working with athletes and performers through challenges related to sport and the hardships of life. You might be facing the unique trials of a current or former Olympian or professional athlete, balancing life as a collegiate or high school student athlete, or navigating the difficulties of youth sport. And whether you are facing a mental health concern, could use some extra support, or seek meaningful growth, I want to be a part of helping you strive towards pursuing mental/emotional health and well-being, achieving your goals, processing your story, and overcoming tough circumstances both on and off the field. Adversity in sport can impact every area of daily functioning just as challenges in life can seriously impact the ability to perform well in sport, often times they're deeply interconnected. I would be honored to walk with you through those challenges.
