Professional statement

Shelley M. Samuels (she/her), LPCC; enjoys working with adults, especially members of her queer community, creative types, people in polyamorous relationships, mature women, survivors of intimate partner/sexual violence and people embarking on life transitions, whether career, gender exploration, relationship, academic or simply wanting to reinvent themselves.

Shelley is an eclectic, integrative therapist, who uses an assortment of different modalities, reflecting her life experience and her passions. Shelley’s collaborative approach is based on feminist therapy. A passionate environmentalist, animal lover and ethical vegan, she draws from eco-psychology, to encourage appreciation of the natural world and issues like climate grief. She is trained in MSBR, helping clients incorporate mindfulness into their lives. She values creativity, offering clients interventions using art and writing.

However, as a trained career counselor, Shelley also brings a practical side to her work, providing career coaching, including formal MBTI (Myers Briggs Trait Instrument) assessments, and supporting clients with workplace challenges. And, for clients seeking more than a listening ear, Shelley can be directive, providing CBT homework, and structure. But what is most important to Shelley’s approach, is that the client always come first, so clients choose the way that works best for them.

Shelley is an LPCC with a master’s degree in clinical and career counseling. She counseled graduate students and career changers in a variety of settings and worked as a recruiter and Human Resources professional. She is trained in CBT, EMDR and MSBR; and has completed additional training in expressive arts therapy, gender transitions, ecotherapy, and grief counseling. She is a certified MBTI assessment interpreter and a California Certified Domestic Violence Advocate.

Shelley is currently located in Oakland, CA but only providing teletherapy to clients located anywhere in California or Florida, where she holds a teletherapy registration.

Message to clients

I value compassion, honesty, creativity, spiritual respect, gratitude, and inner nourishment in whatever forms they may take. I believe in possibility, channeling optimism, and fostering hope. I honor difference. We can always learn from the experiences of others. I believe that the natural world is a gift to us. We are guardians of nature, yet nature can help us; plants and animals can guide us to our inner truths. I believe that we are all artists and architects of our own identities and creativity is innate. I recognize that confronting one’s inner demons might be excruciatingly painful but can also be profoundly healing. I view work as an integral part of a person’s values. I believe we each have our own stories and need to share them to be heard. I think that therapy is neither magic nor science, but believe therapy has the potential to be magical and transformative. I look forward to meeting you to see if I might be a good fit for helping you move forward, whatever that means to you.
