Professional statement

Dr. Tim Pineau is a Clinical Psychologist located on Farragut Square in downtown Washington, DC. He specializes in mindfulness, identity-related concerns and life transitions, anxiety, group and couples therapy, and working with young professionals, athletes and other performers.

Dr. Pineau’s approach is both psychodynamic and relational. He also makes an effort to incorporate mindfulness-based concepts and practices into the work whenever relevant. He helps his clients explore the connection between past experiences and current behaviors, thoughts and relational patterns.

Dr. Pineau emphasizes inclusiveness in his practice and encourages open dialogue about all aspects of a person's identity. He has extensive experience working with individuals who are navigating, discovering, or exploring their identity—whether it be race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc. He also has particular expertise teaching mindfulness to athletes and coaches.

Dr. Pineau aims to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for people to explore who they want to be. His prior experience working and training in a range of different clinical settings with a diverse spectrum of individuals allows him to approach each person he sees with flexibility and compassion to ensure that the work is tailored specifically to them. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Pineau continues to research, publish, and teach about mindfulness, with a particular focus on the intersection of mindfulness and sports psychology. He was also a rower and crew coach for many year prior to becoming a psychologist. His office is conveniently located near the Farragut North (red line) and Farragut West (orange, silver, and blue lines) metro stations.

Message to clients

People often seek therapy to address symptoms or problems that they want to change, but ironically, this felt need for things to be different can often create more stress. When we only see ourselves through the lens of what's "wrong" with us, we end up putting a lot of limits on how honest or open we can be in our relationships, which creates barriers to the intimacy we experience and the support we receive. I believe that people cannot be defined by their "problems," and so my aim is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore the connections between your past experiences, relational patterns, and current behaviors to help you achieve a meaningful sense of self-awareness, thereby giving you more freedom and choice. In particular, the freedom to be your full self, which can then open doors to more depth and intimacy in your life.
