Professional statement

Vickie Mulkerin, MD, LPC, specializes in providing therapy for physicians, other medical professionals, and people in high stress professions. Vickie is a former family medicine physician who changed careers to become a therapist a decade ago. She uses her personal experience in the world of medicine to help doctors, PAs, and NPs struggling with the unique stresses of their jobs, helps them address internal struggles - like perfectionism and imposter syndrome - and treats those things that can impact anyone, like anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, and relationship problems. Attorneys, executives, gifted adults, and those with demanding careers are also a good fit for her practice.

Vickie works collaboratively with clients to identify what they need help with and to set goals. She focuses on her client's strengths to empower them and to help them work towards change, and she instills hope that things will get better. Vickie learned self-compassion in her own journey through addiction and mental health struggles, and she works with her clients to enhance this in themselves. She uses a combination of modalities in counseling, depending on what each individual client needs, but at the core of her work is identifying the things that hold us back or keep us stuck and then replacing them with what works better.

Vickie offers in-person sessions in her Madison, WI office as well as teletherapy throughout Wisconsin. She also provides teletherapy in Maine and Florida.

Message to clients

Physicians are less likely to seek help for mental health and alcohol/drug problems than people in other professions due to very real fears about confidentiality. A mental health diagnosis or a drinking issue can have negative effects on a doctor's career, license, or insurance premiums. I started this practice to offer completely confidential services to physicians and all other licensed professionals so that they can address their concerns in a safe environment, without fear of professional repercussions.

I provide compassion, honesty, insight, and the feedback needed to help you heal and change. I offer support while challenging you to explore the deep stuff, show compassion when you identify things about yourself that are keeping you stuck, and dispel shame. I work to empower clients who feel powerless, as so many doctors do today. I think outside the box and look for the threads that tie how we are now with a belief about ourselves or the world that is very old. I strive to make therapy thought-provoking, safe, challenging, emotional, enlightening, and empowering.
