Professional statement

Brooke A. Finley, PhD, DNP, RN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP, APHN-BC is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and doctorally-prepared, triple board-certified psychiatric mental health, holistic, and addiction nurse practitioner. She has a private practice in New York State where she conducts in-person individual and group psychotherapy while providing high-quality virtual mental health care to patients across the United States.

She graduated from the University of Arizona (UA) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with a psychology minor. After graduation, she worked as a board-certified psychiatric mental health registered nurse and supervisor in psychiatric hospitals, helping adults and children. She continued her studies at UA, earning a Master of Science in Nursing (psychiatric mental health across the lifespan focus) and later two doctorates, a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), studying how therapeutic relationships are created and maintained in virtual care.

Early in her career, she realized that short-term psychotherapies and medication management usually do not help people fundamentally change, preventing a life-giving understanding of oneself. In response, she practices what she considers the best treatment for most people, which is psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Respectively, she completed three psychoanalytic training programs and continues training with world-renowned psychoanalysts and at the Contemporary Freudian Society in New York City. She teaches psychotherapy in the doctoral psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program at Emory University.

Brooke has worked with for many different types of people from all walks of life, but has significant experience working with executives, healthcare professionals, first responders, artists, and college students. She specializes in helping with relationship, professional, personality, and mood issues.

She resides in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, where she enjoys cooking, reading, being in nature, gardening, kayaking, music, art, and caring for animals on a solar-powered woodland permaculture homestead.

Message to clients

Whatever challenges you face, it is my experience that you can work through them when you are motivated to explore what you don't know about yourself and have a good fit with a skilled psychotherapist who understands you. I will work with you using psychoanalytic psychotherapy, an approach that most therapists choose for themselves for good reason. This way of working is considered the most effective for long-term and difficult-to-change issues and provides long-lasting change and psychic relief. Respectively, I won't give you "tools" or homework but will help you understand yourself so you can grow in your capacity to love and work. At a minimum, I work with people at least once a week, if not more frequently, if deeper work is desired.

While I welcome patients who are currently taking psychotropic medication, my personal approach is to help people live well with less psychiatric medication or none at all by using psychotherapy to heal root causes of suffering. I also offer holistic health interventions and functional psychiatry as an adjunctive treatment when indicated. Please note, these services are offered only when embedded within psychotherapy treatment, not as a stand-alone service. It should be explicitly known that I cannot continue or newly prescribe addictive/controlled substances such as stimulants (e.g. Adderall), pain medication (i.e. Lyrica), and sedatives/benzodiazepines (e.g. Ambien, Xanax, Valium, etc.).

Please message me if you'd like to discuss how we could work together. You can also find out more about me and my approach at finleypsych dot com.
