Professional statement

Diana Deister, MD, MS, is a child, adolescent, adult and family psychiatrist providing telepsychiatry visits in Massachusetts for patients of all ages. Many of Dr. Deister’s clients come in with mood, anxiety, attention, or sleep problems. She has advanced training from the Walsh Research Institute in using nutrition (vitamins, minerals, and other supplements) to treat psychiatric and developmental disorders.

Dr. Deister strives to provide a comforting atmosphere in which patients can discuss their problems fully. She addresses the biological, psychological, and environmental aspects of mental health to provide a “one-stop-shop” for busy professionals and students. This integrated approach to mental health acknowledges the real connections between body, mind, family, and communities.

Dr. Deister’s initial evaluation is 120 min to allow adequate time to assess the problem and discuss the initial treatment approach. When possible, children and parents will be seen separately for parts of the session; for adult patients, family involvement in visits is welcomed. Lab tests are recommended for clients who wish to use nutritional approaches as part of the treatment plan; these tests are often covered by insurance.

Dr. Deister received her B.S. in Chemistry from Caltech, and her M.S. in Biology (neuroscience) from the U. of Houston. She completed medical school and psychiatry residency at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and her child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Brown University. She worked for a decade seeing outpatients at Boston Children’s Hospital in the Adolescent Substance use and Addictions Program and the Developmental Medicine Center before leaving in 2023 to start her private practice, Bountiful Mental Health. She is board certified in Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine.

Message to clients

I enjoy using my strong science background to create a developmental understanding of the factors which cause and perpetuate mental health problems for my clients, then we work together to address them using therapy, nutrition, medications, or other treatments as needed. My favorite therapy approaches include motivational interviewing to increase motivation for behavioral change, exposure and response prevention (ERP) for OCD, and family therapy.
