Professional statement

Dr. Ben Barnes is a Clinical Psychologist in Newton, MA who specializes in OCD, anxiety and panic disorders, depression, existential crises, and trauma, including acute and complex trauma and PTSD. He works with teens and adults across the lifespan.

Dr. Barnes’s treatment approach is rooted in evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Knowing that each person’s experience and story is unique, Ben takes the time to get to know his clients before developing a structured treatment plan. While his focus is on behavioral therapy, he wants treatment to make sense to the individual sitting across from him. If something is not working, Ben changes his approach and collaborates with his clients to explore different methods.

Dr. Barnes helps his clients explore how they avoid pain and suffering. He then teaches them how to sit with their negative emotions and offers them healthier coping strategies.

Dr. Barnes offers a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can begin to heal and change thought patterns and/or behaviors. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Delaware and completed a two-year clinical fellowship as part of the PTSD Clinical Team at the VA Boston Medical Center, where he still works as a PTSD Researcher. He is also certified in PE and CPT. He looks forward to meeting you.
