Professional statement

Deb Bushong is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor in Dallas, Texas. She most frequently works with individuals (and their families) who are in the early stages or years of developing or living with a Psychotic disorder. Most often she sees adolescents and young adults who have either developed symptoms of Psychosis or perhaps have already been given a diagnosis of Psychosis, in some form. Deb prefers to work with not just the client but also their families and support systems. There are so many questions that come with a diagnosis like this, and Deb can help assuage concerns by educating everyone about what is happening, how everyone can pull together and help, and what can be expected.

From Deb’s numerous years of experience working with top Psychosis investigators and physicians in academic research and clinical care, she was able to learn numerous types of therapy to help those dealing with Psychosis. One of the aspects that clients and families appreciate most about Deb is that she is exceptionally open and practical in the therapy she provides. It is always important to her to convey that Psychosis is not a death sentence diagnosis, which is how it was once seen. The clients and families appreciate the idea of hope and recovery that Deb brings into her therapy, as well as education about this illness.

Therapy with Deb is comfortable and relaxed. She understands that many people still hesitate when it comes to the idea of therapy. This is one of the reasons that she named her practice “Conversations” – to let people know that starting in therapy with Deb should feel as comfortable as a conversation with a good friend.

Message to clients

If you're reading this and even questioning whether it's a good idea to reach out, go ahead and try it. Some of the comments I receive most from my clients are how much they enjoy therapy with me and that I'm not like any other person they've talked with before. People feel like they can really be themselves, and they don't have to hide what they're really struggling with in life. I sincerely enjoy the work that I do, and I don't think that therapy should be something that weighs a person down. In my office, we laugh, we cry, we say openly & honestly how we feel. It's a "No BS"-zone. The more you get to know me, the more you will believe and come to trust that idea.

I hope you'll come give it a try, even if you're still questioning. I'd love to meet you!

Therapist's note

I offer the option to see clients more than once per week for therapy or adding in items like Life Skills Mentoring and/or Health Advocate assistance. I have an intricate knowledge of the healthcare system, which is extremely helpful with clients who are seeing multiple physicians or simply are not sure what to tell their physicians. As a Health Advocate, I will attend medical appointments (and others appointments, as necessary) with the client to ensure that all providers are working together and have the full treatment picture. Life Skills Mentoring is usually done on-site wherever the client is living. I help the client establish routines for daily living that will be helpful resources for independent living and recovery.
