Professional statement

Dennis Hollingsworth is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, practicing in the Sacramento area of California. Dennis believes in collaborative, non-pathological and genuine relationships with clients. Therapeutic approaches used are Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, Solution Focused work, REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) and Family Systems ideas. Mindfulness perspectives, Motivational Interviewing style and developmental concerns are present too. All ages are welcome, although the current office is not suitable for younger children. Video teletherapy and a limited number of in-person sessions are available. The office is ADA compliant and there is plenty of safe, easy access parking if in-person.

Dennis is firm believer of employing the FIT outcome measures, as well as other evidenced based tracking methods, for continually evaluating progress, effectiveness, and the strength of the therapeutic alliance. Research has shown that active, purposeful, and consistent evaluation of therapy improves outcomes.

In addition to his private practice, Dennis has worked for many years in community-based agencies serving families and individuals. Those experiences were essential in helping Dennis develop his skills as a culturally sensitive, trauma informed, inclusive and open-minded therapist, concerned about social justice and the needs of diverse populations. Areas of expertise include coaching parenting and co-parenting, working with children, adolescents and teens, family issues, divorce, life transitions, men’s and women’s issues, couple’s counseling and substance abuse problems.

Dennis brings a wealth of varied experiences to the work, including years as an elementary school teacher, years in the business world as a sales professional, a background in music and jazz, an avid gardener, and an amateur cook. Always curious and fascinated by the world around, Dennis looks forward to welcoming you.

Message to clients

Thank you for taking the time to learn about my practice. I hope the following short introduction is helpful to you in your decision-making process.

The largest factor in creating change is you (e.g., your attitude, your capacity, and your belief in the process). Your relationship with the therapist (me) is next. There are some tangible challenges associated with therapy. Outcomes are not always predictable, and unexpected thoughts and emotions might occur. Emotional pain is often temporary and an integral part of the healing process. Because we will be making a collaborative effort, your willingness to participate fully in therapy will help form the quality of your experience. And the good news is that you just might get what you are looking for! Sometimes folks discover whole new avenues of knowledge that were not in their awareness prior to beginning. And the truth is, that happens to me too!

My purpose is to help you discover, clarify, and maximize your own potential for healing and growth. I look forward to talking with you about your hopes, needs and questions about the process.

Therapist's note

For Kaiser clients only, I am unable to schedule a first appointment directly. You must call Kaiser Behavioral Health and they will schedule an interview with one of their own intake folks. This may take a bit of time. They will discuss your needs and if approved, issue a referral authorization. Please give them my name as the contracted provider you are interested in working with. Let me know when that is done. Next, I block a slot for you on my Kaiser calendar in Tridium (their system). Lastly, I contact Kaiser for providers and request that you be entered in the system as my client and to schedule you for the appointment. Thanks for your cooperation.
