Professional statement

Emily Brunsten is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker located in New York City who sees clients both virtually and in-person in Ridgewood, Queens. Emily’s clients are young adults and adults, with limited availability for teenagers and families. She has years of experience supporting clients with a wide array of concerns, histories, and identities. She also has specific expertise in supporting queer and trans-identified clients, as well as young adults navigating the process of acclimating to our challenging world.

Emily believes that psychotherapy is both a process and a relationship, in which healing unfolds as a result of the connection between client and therapist. Emily encourages clients to hold compassion for and curiosity about themselves as they endeavor to discover more about their inner worlds. Emily practices psychodynamic psychotherapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to offer clients a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges in their lives, as well as past trauma that might be keeping them stuck. She believes there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to therapy, and is able to incorporate skills and techniques based in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) when they fit a client's needs.

Emily holds a degree in social work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. She received post-graduate certification in psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy through the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. Additionally, she has completed EMDR training parts 1 and 2, and is currently training in Attachment-Focused EMDR through the Parnell Institute.

Message to clients

I approach the therapeutic process with reverence, openness, curiosity, and a desire to understand your unique experience. My goal is to provide a warm, non-judgmental space where you can feel heard and deepen your knowledge of yourself. I believe in the importance of cultural competency and responsiveness: I understand that your identity, your relationships, and your lived experiences provide meaning and context to your inner world. My relational and trauma-informed approach stems from my training in psychodynamic psychotherapy (insight-oriented talk therapy), as well as IFS (internal family systems therapy) and EMDR.

Let's be curious together and figure out what contributes to and amplifies the challenges in your life, and explore ways to uncover your healthy self.
