Professional statement

Glen Barnard is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist with a private practice in New York City.  He works with adult individuals, college-age students, and couples who are facing a broad range of issues and challenges that includes anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, relationship concerns, and adjustment to life transitions as well as those exploring their gender, and sexuality identities.

Glen also works with artists who are investigating their creative identity and seeking more freedom, motivation, and self-compassion in their artistic process.

Glen's approach to therapy is collaborative, interactive, and conversational while empowering the client to lead in their own way. When appropriate, Glen gives supportive feedback, uses humor, and reflects on themes and patterns he is witnessing when learning the narrative of his patient so they feel heard and valued.

Prior to being in private practice, Glen was a staff therapist at New York University's Student Health Center and the Tisch School of the Arts.  In the past, Glen was a certified HIV pre & post-test counselor and educator, as well as an ethnographer for a National Institue of Health-funded study of queer, homeless youth coming of age in NYC.

With over 15 years of experience, Glen tailors treatment plans to meet a client’s specific goals, needs and motivation for therapy by using a variety of skills and modalities that include talk therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive and behavioral therapy.

Message to clients

Above all, I believe the relationship between a client and their therapist is essential to how the therapeutic process unfolds.

As a psychotherapist, I strive to provide a safe and nonjudgmental space, so you can express yourself honestly, take emotional risks, and tolerate the discomfort that sometimes comes with processing your feelings but can ultimately lead to finding courage, change, and acceptance.  I support my patient in taking a proactive role in shaping their life by utilizing their strengths while understanding their choices.

Life – and how an individual lives it – can be complicated. Learning how to disentangling oneself from their past, by making new associations and extending their self-knowledge can bring into being good self-care practices and healthy habits, impassioning a fulfilling and authentic life.
