Professional statement

Lee Chafee is a psychotherapist in private practice on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island, providing individual treatment for adults. Lee’s areas of interest include trauma, anxiety, depression, and negative self-held beliefs that may be rooted in childhood experience. She works with her clients to find what is keeping them "stuck", how to break through, and move forward with more fulfilment in their lives.

Lee draws from a number of interventions including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation and mind-body connections. Lee finds that the psychodynamic approach of examining fear or sadness or trauma of today may find those symptoms' genesis in earlier experiences. An understanding of this connection can be freeing.

Lee has worked at Butler Hospital with women in trauma, both individually and through facilitating groups. She has experience helping with loss, grief, anger and other emotional difficulties. Lee values the relationships in her clients' lives: from family, romantic, and workplace -- to friendships worthy of examination and possible repair.

Lee is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in Rhode Island and a member of the National Association of Social Workers. She is a member of the Rhode Island Association of Psychoanalytic Psychologies, and has served on their board for three years. She also is a member of the American Psychological Association, Division 39 (psychoanalysis & psychoanalytic psychology).

Lee completed her master’s degree in clinical social work at Boston College and received her bachelor’s degree in English Literature at Harvard College.

Lee’s first career was as a news reporter and editor in New York City for United Press International.
