Dr. Shemya Vaughn provides counseling to people in BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities who are living with anxiety, depression, and trauma. She specializes in working with adults recovering from childhood abuse and neglect; adults raised by emotionally immature parents. Sometimes this means helping people recover from abusive romantic relationships as well.
Dr. Vaughn's aim is to decolonize therapy using a trauma-informed approach to make sure people in the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ community feel safe, affirmed, and validated in the therapy space. She adjusts her therapy approach depending on your personality and/or what issues you want to work on. People have called her a thought companion who helps them notice their blind spots.
Dr. Vaughn has her master's degree and doctorate in rehabilitation counseling and received training in crisis counseling, sex therapy, queer affirming therapy, and providing adjustment therapy to people with disabilities (adjusting to having a medical or mental health diagnosis as an adult). In her previous careers, she was a counseling professor, a college counselor, and an employment counselor for Veterans.
