Professional statement

Dr Susan Spilman in a licensed psychologist --clinical and holisitc---in Florida who is currently offering online therapy. She finds that people seeking therapy are usually in acute distress and often have repeating patterns in their life that are causing them pain. Her focus is on listening deeply to the client's experiencel and reflecting back to check that I have understood what they are expressing.ooking at the patterns in a person's life, exploring where these came from and then working in the present to help her clients change these patterns that are not working for them.

Dr Spilman's backgroun in Existential psychology, Buddhist philosophy and extensive clinical pracitce plus her own experiences in self-development inform her appraoch to helping clients. Compassionate listening is a center of her approach where the client feels safe and listened to. If she sees patterns in the client's life, she will inquire about the client's past, exlore where these patterns came from and then helping her clients change any patterns that are not working for them.

Dr Spilman has found that the use of various behavioral approaches can help her clients to make the changes they decide are necessary.

Dr Spilman has extensive and varied experience, having worked in many different clinical settings---from state hospitals with very disturbed patients, to community mental health and a long-standing private practice in the United States and Bali, Indonesia where she lived for many years.

Message to clients

Greetings---I understand the pain of our life not going well: transitions, loss, conflict and general unhappiness. I would love to help you explore issues in your life that are concerning you, where they came from and how to make changes that will lead to a life you are happy with. I know that finding a therapist you connect with and can feel safe with can be a challenge---having seen several therapists over the course of my life. The free consultations are a good way to get a feel for me and any other therapist.

I have lived a rather non-traditional life, living in Bali, Indonesia for 20 years. This both reflects my rather adventurist spirit and indicates I am open to helping you explore your dreams and breaking out of any ways you feel confined--by yourself, your family patterns and/or your culture.

Helping you live the life you want is an important focus for me. Developing awareness of what is in the way and then finding ways to change patterns that aren't working for you is a major goal.

If this resonates with you, I look forward to meeting you and starting this journey! Any questions, please ask and/or set up a brief intro chat.
