Professional statement

Dr. Tobi Zausner is a PhD Research Psychologist and an LCSW Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Located in New York City, she meets with patients by telehealth from New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Illinois. Dr. Zausner, who works with adults, ages18 and older, specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and trauma. Whether the trauma comes from abuse in childhood, sexual assault, loss, grief, illness, interpersonal relations, environmental toxicity, or socio-political disasters, Dr. Zausner helps patients address the origin of their symptoms and build a personal goal of walking more freely into a new and healthier life.

To assist individuals on their path toward wellness, Dr. Zausner works in multiple clinical modalities. In addition to psychodynamic or talk therapy, she utilizes clinical hypnosis, EMDR, guided meditation, Internal Family Systems, relaxation/stress reduction, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, energy psychology, and motivational interviewing. Each modality is personalized for the individual patient. Offering a variety of methods is important because emotional issues may resolve more effectively with one therapeutic modality than another.

Dr. Zausner received her PhD from New York University and her Master of Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College-CUNY. Dr. Zausner is also a visual artist with works in museums and private collections and has authored two books. Her first book, When Walls Become Doorways: Creativity and the Transforming Illness, shows how physical illness can become a turning point to a new and more creative life. Her second book, The Creative Trance: Altered States of Consciousness and the Creative Process, published by Cambridge University Press, reveals that we are in an altered state of consciousness during creativity and that throughout history, daydreams have changed the world.

Message to clients

Wellness, happiness, and self-evolution are positive goals in life and in your therapy. As a therapist, I am here to listen to you and help you on your path to attain them. We all have greater potential than we realize, but often our inherent abilities are not available to us because they may be hidden by stress, depression, anxiety, or trauma. In examining your difficulties together, we can work to uncover their causes and turn hardships into strength.

In psychotherapy, there is no such thing as “one size fits all,” so your therapeutic process will be flexible, tailored to your own needs, and revised as those needs are met and changed. That is why I work in multiple therapeutic modalities. You may respond more fully to one method than another, and your specific issues may be addressed more successfully with different methods of treatment.

We all have a healthy Self within, a part of us that remains uninjured and completely whole, no matter what difficulties life may bring. In therapy we can work to have that part come forward for a more realized and fulfilling life.
