Professional statement

Valerie Thompson is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Birmingham, Al specializing in life transitions, relationship issues, work/life harmony, trauma, and parenting.

Valerie works with each client to first value and prioritize themselves. Self care is not how one steps out of their life to recharge, it is how one builds a life they don't have to escape from. Valerie works with each client to set goals and integrate nourishing practices into daily life. When clients are cared for and well, they have more resources to meet and overcome their challenges, care for others better, and experience more joy.

Valerie has a BS in psychology and an MS in counseling. She has 24 years of experience working in non profit agencies, women's shelters, in consulting capacities, and in private practice. She considers it an honor and privilege to bear witness to each client's unique story and hold space for them to heal and transform.

Valerie's office is conveniently located in the UAB area off of University Blvd. For those who cannot or prefer not to come into the office, she offers virtual appointments as well.

Message to clients

First, proud for you for reaching out. Life is challenging and sometimes we all need help and guidance. Realizing you have this need is a big step, as is reaching out for help. It is brave. Give yourself credit for this work. You deserve it.

I honor you as a unique individual with your own story, challenges, gifts and feelings. My approach is tailored to your needs. I believe you come to therapy with all you need to heal. My job is to help you navigate your thoughts and feelings to tell your story and identify the patterns that don't serve you as well as the ones that do. We use the latter to develop tools to address the former. Together, we set goals to help you live a better quality of life in a meaningful, authentic way.

All this is done in a safe, judgement free environment. You are deserving of dignity, validation, and care. I respect and value you just as you are. Welcome.
