Professional statement

Dr. Amy Smith is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Denver, CO. She specializes in supporting clients through grief, and works with individuals, couples, and families including parents. Amy’s clients arrive at therapy feeling lost in their grief, whether that’s the loss of a job, a loved one, a pet, a relationship, a pregnancy, or a period of life. They feel isolated and overwhelmed by feelings like sadness, anger, frustration, disappointment, and confusion. Amy helps them through these emotions and to process through their loss to find a new sense of peace. She also works with those who struggle with anxiety, trauma, burnout, or change.

Dr. Smith understands the complexity of grief and how grief tends to interact with other emotions, sometimes in surprising ways. She is an empathetic therapist who listens and validates the experiences of her clients. By creating a kind, compassionate space in therapy, Amy guides clients as they process through the pain from their loss. In couples’ and family sessions, Amy provides communication skills to help each client speak openly and vulnerably. All clients benefit from the exploratory and solution-focused nature of their therapy sessions.

Dr. Smith earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and a PhD in Applied Developmental Science from Colorado State University. She particularly enjoys giving clients the therapeutic space they need to be themselves as they navigate challenging times in their lives.

Message to clients

I get that life is sometimes messy and it can feel like no one really gets what you are going through. Maybe sometimes it even feels hard for you to understand the emotions and experiences that you are going through. I am committed to creating a space for you that is accepting, supportive, and allows you to feel safe to be yourself. Whoever you are, whatever experiences you have had, and whatever you are facing now, you are welcome.

I customize my therapeutic approach to each client I work with. I recognize that no two people or journeys are the same. Therefore it doesn’t make sense that therapy would look the same for everyone. I have a wide range of training and experience that I use to customize therapy to your needs. This space is yours for healing and growth. I promise that I will always seek to understand you and to help you make the choices and next steps that are right for you.

When asked to describe the type of work I do, I often say that I specialize in relationships - the relationship with your spouse, your child, your family, or even the relationship you have in yourself - and how these relationships and the experiences we have impact our wellbeing. My helping you to better understand yourself, your relationships, and your experiences, I can help you to find meaning and connection in your life. I look forward to meeting you!
