Dr. Christopher Stults is a licensed psychologist in New York City. He works with individuals and couples from all walks of life, and he is particularly passionate about working with LGBTQ+ people and people in non-monogamous relationships. Many of Dr. Chris’s clients come in to address anxiety, depression, relationship problems, major life stressors (e.g., marriage/divorce, coming out), career difficulties, and substance use.
Dr. Chris is trained in psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as other humanistic and mindfulness-based approaches. Throughout treatment, he helps his clients understand how their early experiences and relationships shaped who they are today, as well as the difficulties they are experiencing. With that insight, Dr. Chris provides his clients with practical strategies to navigate their challenges.
Dr. Chris's style is warm, interactive, and intellectually engaging. He also uses humor and creativity to facilitate the therapeutic process when appropriate. When clients first start with Dr. Chris, they will work to build a trusting and nonjudgmental therapeutic relationship while also putting together relevant current and historical information to inform the treatment. As clients progress in therapy, they will feel more confident that they have what it takes to face whatever life throws at them.
Dr. Chris received his Ph.D. from New York University. He has worked at several hospitals and counseling centers, including Montefiore Medical Center, Harlem Hospital, Barnard College Counseling Center, and Baruch College Counseling Center. He is also a professor of psychology and LGBTQ+ health researcher. Outside of private practice, he is a musician and avid movie/theater/concertgoer. Dr. Chris primarily sees clients online but is available for in-person sessions in certain circumstances.
