Jay Serrano, MA, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor who works with children ages 6 and older, adolescents, adults, older adults, and families. He has extensive experience supporting individuals navigating ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma, mood and emotional regulation, behavioral concerns, life transitions, and family conflict. Jay is passionate about creating a welcoming, supportive environment where clients feel understood, respected, and empowered to grow at their own pace.
Jay takes an eclectic, person-centered approach to therapy, tailoring treatment to each client's unique needs, strengths, and goals. He integrates evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, Trauma-Focused CBT, Play Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and systems-based interventions. He believes meaningful change begins with a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, collaboration, and genuine connection.
With more than 12 years of experience in the mental health field, Jay has worked across in-home, inpatient, and outpatient settings in roles including therapist, case manager, group counselor, support worker, social advocate, and verbal de-escalation instructor. His diverse background has equipped him with practical strategies to help individuals and families improve communication, strengthen coping skills, regulate emotions, and navigate complex behavioral and developmental challenges with confidence.
Jay sees clients in person at Exceptional Wellness Counseling's Manalapan and Shrewsbury offices and also provides secure telehealth sessions for clients throughout New Jersey. He welcomes individuals and families seeking compassionate, practical support and is committed to helping clients build resilience, strengthen relationships, and move toward lasting emotional wellness.
ADHD - Skill-building and support around organizational challenges, distracted attention, procrastination; building and maintaining healthy routines and structure
Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)
Depression - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life
Life transitions - Coping with difficult or impactful life changes, such as moving to a new area, relationship transitions, child rearing, or career changes; learning self-care to better manage resulting stress
Mood disorders - Clinical depression, persistent depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders that cause disturbances in the client's mood, causing mood swings, restless sleep, and/or elevated mood
