Professional statement

Kaela Salisbury is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist based in San Francisco, California and works with couples and other relationship types. Many of her clients come to therapy feeling unfulfilled in their important relationships and hoping there could be more connection and intimacy possible for them. Kaela is particularly skilled in helping clients stretch their capacity to be honest about where they are getting stuck and find the courage to try something new. She helps her clients tend to the vulnerable places within themselves that struggle to change by offering tangible tools as well as deeper layers of exploration.

Kaela’s approach is rooted in Relational Life Therapy, a transformational and effective couples therapy method developed by Terry Real that is direct, compassionate and tailored to each unique relationship. Kaela also draws on other techniques including PET-C, The Gottman Method, EFT and Hakomi. She incorporates mindfulness and somatic therapy tools to help clients move beyond a cognitive understanding and into an embodied, felt experience of change.

Kaela is deeply passionate about this work and believes in the possibility for transformation in relationships. She wants her clients to see real change in their lives towards more fulfilling, honest and connected relationships. She works hard to help her clients achieve a new vision in their relationships and asks her clients to work hard too.

In Kaela’s experience, couples and relationship therapy is most effective when done in-person and she prefers to see clients at her office in San Francisco. She offers virtual therapy on a case by case basis.

Message to clients

When I begin working with couples, I like to get to the heart of what is going on. In our very human tendency towards making sense of the world, we often come up with stories and beliefs about what isn't working - "it's my partner's fault"; "they will never change"; "I have to hide parts of myself to be safe"; and on and on. I honor your stories and how they have helped you. And, I ask you to be open to new possibilities. I ask you to hold your stories lightly and be curious about what might arise through our work together that could shift the way you see your partner and yourself.

After a thorough assessment, I will offer my understanding of what I think is going on. As a group, we will refine this understanding to put together a framework for what needs to change and how we can get there. Then, we will dive deeply into the work. I offer weekly therapy as well as longer sessions and weekend intensives - we will talk about which option makes sense for you and your goals.

If you commit to this exploration, you will not be the same on the other side. Your relationship will not be the same. My hope for you is that you leave therapy with a relationship that is more real and beautiful than even your wildest dreams. It is my commitment to help you get there.
