Professional statement

Kendra Capalbo is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Providence, RI and one of the only therapists in the state who specializes entirely in couples’ therapy. She does not see individual clients but works with couples of all ages.

Kendra loves the Gottman Method because it helps couples get back to the basics of communication and rediscover their love for one another. The Gottman Method assessment includes an extensive, at-home questionnaire that includes questions related to a couple’s social history together, the history of their relationship, their individual histories, and the story of how they fell in love and allows Kendra and her clients to better understand where their challenges stem from. She uses this questionnaire, along with three therapy sessions (one as a couple and one with each partner) plus one feedback session, to develop an individualized treatment plan, which includes helping her clients learn how to deal with conflicts, including perpetual ones, in a healthy way. She teaches a variety of interventions aimed at helping clients develop a healthier, more intimate relationship. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy include disarming conflicting verbal communication, increasing intimacy, respect, and affection, and creating a better sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Kendra is passionate about couples counseling and believes all of her clients deserve to be in healthy, loving relationships. Outside of private practice, Kendra works as a therapist at the RI Department of Corrections. She looks forward to meeting you.

Message to clients

Although I have always had an affinity for couples’ therapy, it was not until I began truly utilizing the Gottman Method interventions that I fell in love with it. Why you may ask? Because it is effective. It is not a magic pill, but for couples committed to doing the work, it can pave the way to a deeper, more connected relationship.
I would describe my style as direct, but compassionate. As previously mentioned, therapy is work and a lot of that happens outside of the office. My expectation when working with a couple is that they will do what is required of them at home and not expect to simply put the effort in during the 90-minute session.
As I mentioned in my video, couples’ therapy is truly a different style than individual work, but many clinicians do not have the specialized training to know how to work with couples. I truly believe more harm can be done when clinicians try to do couples’ therapy as if they are doing individual therapy with two people in the room. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of asking any therapist you speak with what specific training he/she has in working with couples. Most graduate programs do not focus on it, or in some cases, include it at all.
I offer 30-minute complimentary sessions to couples who are considering working with me. I think it is crucial that the chemistry is right between myself and BOTH partners. If it is not, therapy is unlikely to be successful. During this session I will go over what you can expect in therapy in more detail and answer any questions you may have so that we can make an educated decision as to whether or not I am a good fit for you and vice versa.
I truly look forward to the opportunity to work with you on your journey back to each other!
