Professional statement

Nick Mian, Ph.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Massachusetts and Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of New Hampshire. Nick graduated from Bowdoin College and completed his doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He has practiced at several community and clinical agencies in the Boston area and completed his pre-doctoral internship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, focusing on child psychotherapy and neuropsychological assessment. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. Nick’s academic research focuses on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of anxiety disorders, especially in young children, as well as engagement in mental health services. His scholarly work is featured in peer-reviewed journals and several books.

In his private practice, Nick specializes in emotional and behavioral disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults, especially anxiety. He also offers parent coaching/guidance and will work with preschool-age children. His theoretical orientation is integrative, with the greatest influences from cognitive-behavioral therapy (including exposure-based work) and family systems interventions. His office is in Cambridge, MA, near Central Square. Remote sessions are also available when appropriate.

Message to clients

When clients start to work with me, they'll often say things like "oh, this is great... you're just... like a regular guy."

I guess that's a complement. I think they mean that I don't fit a stereotype they have about what a therapist is like... particularly a male therapist, perhaps. I am just a regular guy, apparently... who happens to have a lot of excellent training and expertise in mental health treatment.

If you're interested in learning more about my work, please reach out--I'll be open and clear about my initial thoughts, the approach I'd recommend, and if it sounds like I would be a good fit. I am well-versed in evidence-based therapies, but I am not dogmatic or rigid--I apply the principles of evidence-based therapy in a way that makes sense for my clients.
