Professional statement

Dr. Ryan Robinson is a Clinical Psychologist in Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. who specializes in anxiety disorders, depression, trauma, relationships, life transitions and working with individuals of color and members of the LGBTQIA community.

While Dr. Robinson can offer tangible concrete tools, his passion lies in long-term work that is insight-oriented and relational. He focuses on strengthening his relationship with each of his clients, so they feel safe and comfortable digging deep and revealing their most vulnerable elements. He spends time in sessions exploring how past experiences influence how they interact with the world today.

When working with clients who are navigating the coming out process, Dr. Robinson empathizes with their experience, knowing how hard it is to come out and recognizing where they are in process. He helps them find their voice and feel empowered to be who they are and love who they want.

Dr. Robinson creates a safe, warm space where individuals can begin to identify, challenge and positively change relational patterns. His office is located near the Dupont Circle metro station.

Message to clients

I believe the therapeutic relationship is an important factor in the process of reaching your therapeutic goals. This is why a primary focus of mine is to build a strong therapeutic alliance with support, validation and acceptance. It is through building a trusting relationship that we can begin the process of deepening the therapeutic work. I strive to create a safe and warm environment where individuals can begin to identify, challenge and eventually change maladaptive relational patterns.

I also believe that our life and cultural experiences, especially our earliest ones, are fundamental in shaping the way we view ourselves and others. It is essential to understand my patient's cultural identity (i.e., race, gender, gender identity, sexuality, class) and how it has shaped their development. Often negative life experiences can create problematic ways of coping and a skewed perception of who we are in the world. This can lead to a variety of issues related to anxiety, depression, shame, rejection, stress, relationship issues, identity development, grief/loss, and sexual intimacy.
